Dr. Ian's weekly tip
Exercising can be so much more productive when you have a regular partner who's doing it with you. A partner can push you when you start taking it easy and can also be a good source of friendly competition, helping you reach your goals while having some fun doing it. Workout buddies can also be a physical help, providing assistance if you need help lifting weights. Working out with someone can also help the time go by much faster. Make sure your buddy also signs up for The Challenge. Then you're both able to track your progress and reach your personal goals while also contributing toward reaching our 50 million pound goal!

Dr. Ian, I just avoided surgery on my lower leg. I have been in a cast for more than 12 wks. I am afraid it will take me longer with rehab to get at least 90% usage back. What can I do for exercises that will allow my spirit to revitalize and my body to get in better shape?

Dr. Ian~ I am proud to join the 50 million pound challenge. Can you help me with my problem? Over the last 12 years I have had 7 back surgeries. I managed to continue working as an R.N. until last year, when I had a total knee replacement. It went badly, and has been re-done 3 times over the last 8 months. My leg now has a severe deformity and I can't walk without a walker, and a good deal of pain. I have gained 100 lbs in the months of my disability.I am now very deconditioned. How can I increase my activity level and get in some kind of better condition? Any one with advice? I will listen!!!!

Dr. Ian,
I am just beginning with this challenge. I'm excited and I love all the information you freely give to us.
My questions is.........when I filled out my information online to track my progress....I entered the incorrect start date.....and I can not find a way to go in and change that date.
Would you please email me?
I want to do this right.....Help!
Thanks.

I've always said you will lose better with others than by yourself because your walking & talking and for-you-know-it, your at the end of the 3-mile trail. It helps..It really does. I am very excited about this aspect of the challenge & if there is anyone out there that needs a buddy for motovation don't hesitate I got your back!!!

I just joined today and I will be moving to Kenner very soon. I'm looking for a buddy that I can work out with. I'm 23 years old and I am a Type II diabetic. I'm not on any insulin to control my diabetes, just diet and exercise. So far, I've managed to lose 26 pounds and 3 sizes on my own, but I can't seem to get pass 155. I welcome a buddy to help motivate me and I motive my buddy!!

This is very painful for me. First, admitting that I have gained so much weight, and second recognizing that I have horrible eating habits that I have developed as a crutch in my life. Anyone looking for a compassionate ear, please don't hesitate to drop a line.

I would like to have a online buddy system. My sister and I have joined forces and she lives in CA. Starting today we will call each other everyday to check on each other. I am trying really hard not to eat the bad foods like chips, candy, fried foods. I have been eating tuna hear lately, doing my exercise and drinking water and dieter's tea. The dieter's tea really cleans your system out. If anyone would like to be my online buddy that woulld be great. My e-mail address is gigiasmith@yahoo.com.

Hello, I am a 48 year old looking at 50 soon. I promised myself by the time I reached 50 I will be at my ideal weight. It would be nice to have a buddy. I know that I have a long way to go. I am 4' 11' and weighed in this morning at 189. That is the most I've ever weighed. I joined today and I know I can do this. My goal is 120. I know that the buddy system will work because we both should be able to keep each other motivated. My Mom passed away a year ago this month and she wanted so bad for my sister and I to get the weight off. I am a African-American female who has been married now for five years in August and would like to be around for many many more years to come. I am now in the Chicago area, but planning to move to the Gurnee, Waukegan,or Zion area before the year in. I look forward to hearing from a buddy or buddys soon. Thank You

Dr IAN I am a 49 year old 5 feet 9 inches tall black male. I am trying to lost weight by doing something that I enjoy and that is roller skating. I now roller skate about 60 miles per week and have lost 8 pounds. I started this about three months ago at 270 pounds and I am now down to 262 pounds. I am now losing about 1 pound a week and my goal is to loose 30 pounds and to skate 50 miles in one day by my fifty birthday in November 2007. I now find that I have to eat breakfast in order to keep from getting hungry before lunch. Now that I am exercising at the level on Monday(15 miles), Wednesday(15 miles), and Saturday(30 miles) I often feel low on energy could this be from what I am eating or is this to be expected from a 49 year old body?

I have never tried long distance before. However, I am not against it and need a buddy either way. I really need some support, in the past, I have started with people and was the motivator and when I needed a push I couldn't receive it because everyone was sitting back waiting on me. Through that I stopped all together because it became job. I felt like I was managing people and I do that at and I don't prefer to do that in a group. So to get to the point I just need someone who can lead and motivate as I do that way we will always have each others back. Thank you.
