Be Cool, Stay Cool

One way to keep cravings at bay between meals is to get a bag of ice chips and chew on them. Water has no calories, and the crunching of the ice can actually trick your body into believing it's eating something to quench the hunger pangs. It also helps you stay cool when summer heat's on the rise.

We're going to need some of that ice when we head to Houston on June 30 because we've got a show that's hot! Destiny's Child founding member Kelly Rowland, gospel and soul singer Kelly Price, and R&B artist Omarion, will turn up the heat for a free afternoon of fun, fitness & live music at our Challenge event in downtown Houston's Hermann Square on Saturday, June 30th. There will also be an appearance and autograph session by Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams. Join us for the fun and tell your family and friends to come out and help the community support this historic campaign to "give up the pounds, not the fight."

Yollie:

Tonight I've deceided to be a part of the '50 Million Pound Challenge' and I am very happy and excited to be a part of such a positive statement to our community!! I look forward to a positive outcome. I too like many have been challenged with my weight for many years, and doing weight watchers on and off, and on and off and so on... The most positive thing I can share about my weight loss journey is that when I consistently stop eating at 8:00 pm rather than 6pm (starving) or grazing all evening I always have positve results, I've been trying to complete this goal for 21 days to start a positive new habit.

I've sent this information out to my family and friends and hope they will too take the challenge that you all have for the sake of our health. I'm look forwarding to being what "I AM," and that is to say "I AM 20lbs lighter."

Miracles & Blessings!

CBurley:

This morning I was listening the Steve Harvey morning show and thought to myself, I should join this challenge but also felt that it would be a losing battle. I've tried so many times to lose weight, I would start and then fall off. That was until this evening, my 6 year daughter told me in the car that a child at her camp said that I was FAT although my child defended me saying I was beautiful!! I knew right then I had to do something. Please include me in this Everyday Celebrity Fit Club, I need help!!! I want to avoid the cycle of diabetes, and HBP in my family and at the rate I'm going I at the front of the line.

My six year daughter should not have to defend my honor for something like this.

Sincerely,

Cynthia

Patty:

I work out at least 5-6 days a week, and have done so for the past 20 some years. One of my motivations (and the most important) is my music. Every breath I take, every step I take, every move I make, is done to the beat of my music. I walk to my music, do a slow trot to my music, lift weights with my music, work out with my punching bag to the beat of my music. Unfortunately, I don’t think I could work out without my music; but fortunately, I can’t think of any reason why I couldn’t have it with me always. I have tried it, and it is grueling! Perhaps it’s all psychological, but I seem to get tired much faster. I could not endure even an hour without it (maybe I could, but I would not enjoy it at all.) When I’m walking outside of home, I wear a fanny pack, which holds my Walkman - yeah that’s right, I still listen to tapes. They don’t skip like the CDs I’ve tried, and I don’t know anything about the iPod. I think they are a bit expensive, and I don’t know to use them.

My other motivation is having my own inexpensive home gym. I love exercise equipment. I have several pieces and use each and every one of them. The most expensive piece I own, is my treadmill. I would recommend that as a first piece to anyone. Other sizeable pieces were either given to me or purchased at a yard sale. I would also recommend the stretch bands. You can get a fantastic workout with bands alone.

Perhaps music is not an inspiration for many of you, but I’m hoping someone out there will try it and love it as I do.

Y’all keep up the good work.

Kimberly Hall:

Hi Dr Ian,

My stats are as follows:
Age - 41 (on July 17)
Height - 5'2"
Weight - 160 pounds
Weight goal - 140 pounds
I guess Steve Harvey & Nephew Tommy would say that I am an order of french fries.

I have been working out for the past eight weeks. I know that I am making some progress. My husband has noticed that my body is becoming more toned. Although I have lost inches, I have not lost any weight.

I workout five times per week during my lunch break. I am trying to add another 30 minutes of work out time. My workout consists of mainly a 20 - 30 minute cardio routine - treadmill (slow pace jog with an incline) or power walk outside. I try to fit in weights to work my legs and arms. I plan to really work my abs once I lose the weight.

I try to eat healthy & for the most part I am successful.

I set a goal to lose a dress size by my birthday. As of today, I have 12 days to lose 10 pounds. HELP!

I have been struggling with my weight since the death of my mother 2years ago. I need lots of encouragement and support. I want to get rid of this "monkey on my back" ! If you got that same monkey riding your back and can feel my struggle, please contact me at e-mail (ckinght1@nmff.org). I live in Gary, IN about 30 miles outside of Chicago. I love walking along the Chicago lakefront and would welcome a walking partner to help keep me motivated.

DCPeach4225:

When I first heard about this I was not sure about taking the challenge, but when I went to the gym and just decided let me see if I lost anything, I noticed I lost 3lbs I was thrilled. My daughter goes with me to help support my efforts. She was waiting for me outside and saw me comeout with a smile on my face and I told her what happen and she was happy also. Now thatI have seen this small but, big change I can't wait to get back to the gym on Thursday. Look out world here I come!! :)

sherrill:

I started the 50 pound chanllenge on the 25th of June 2007. My starting weight was 164 and i weighted myself on July 3 and i had lost 5 pounds and i feel great. I have changed my eating diet and it is really working. i would of never tthought that i would see results so soon but it is a blessing to see the pounds rolling off every week.

I wish everyone good luck to a new look and healthy life.

JAMIEN:

I NEED A WORKOUT BUDDY, I FEEL THAT WE CAN GET MORE ACCOMPLISHED TOGETHER AS OPPOSED TO DOING IT ALONE. I'M IN SOUTH BEND, IN VERY CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN SOUTH BEND, ANYBODY FROM THAT AREA SERIOUS ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT AND NOT DOING IT ALONE PLEASE SEND ME AN MESSAGE @ myspace.com/cherrelle2kids
THANKS AND I HOPE TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE VERY SOON

Jether :

I just joined the 50 Million Pound Challenge today after seeing many commercials about it on BET. I actually started my nutritional diet before I started my exercise routine. I figured that it would be more beneficial to change my eating habits first than to start an exercise regimen so I can get used to eating better, because if I eat a cheeseburger after I ran for a half an hour would be useless. I'm not too sure of my weight because I do not own a scale and the last time I got weighed was two months after I gave birth to my son in February.

So I think I am somewhere around 160 - 170lbs, I am 5'5" and my goal weight is 135. Being apart of this challenge will motivate me to stay on the right path and help me to encourage other friends to join in. Good luck to everyone and remember we're losing the pounds, not the battle!

Shirelo:

The Houston event was great I was very motivated I even went to the gym after I left. The entertaiment was fun and the information was great. I learned something new and shocking about myself. I know alot of people can relate that what they see in the mirror looks good to them and what they see on the scale is scary. Thats my case. Here I am what I concider thick and fine size 10-12, but 80lb+ overweight. The sad part is that I know what my problem is, its working the nightshift at a hospital and eating junck food all night to stay awake. I am looking to change that and stick with it, I am looking for healthy snack alternitives.

Isha:

I started my excercise routine before I signed up for this program. I'm not a member of a gym nor do I have a personal trainer. I'm a single mom of 1 and my son and I own bicycles. I told my son, who is 6 yrs old mind you, to nag at me every evening to go bike riding with him.
And beleive me, he does every day.
I started out weighing 230lbs (5-10-07) I now weigh 214lbs (6-29-07), and this is without a proper diet.
Now thanks to this program I have support and endless amount of information that I didn't have before. Watch out world, Here I come.

Stephanie :

I'm almost 26 years old and I have found myself in a rut. I believe I became lazy right around the time I met my current husband. That's about six years ago and 60 extra pounds later. Now I have come to the end of my rope and I realize I need some help. My mother just had knee surgery and during my hospital visit I swear they gave her a million pills. After that I decided I didn't want to be a pill popper. At the same time I have tried diet after diet and nothing seems to keep me motivated. If anyone has any great ideas to help me please let me know. By the way tomorrow will be exactly one year of no cigarettes. I wish you all the best. God Bless!!!

Aretha Beal:

HI, Im a 36 year old female who has been struggling with my weight over the years. I'm always starting a diet then stopping. Well I was at my daughter's open house this pass saturday, and I took a look around at the family and I was the biggest female there, at that moment I decided I no longer wanted to be the fat girl in the family. So I knew I had to do something about it and I started to eat right. I haven't started excersing yet, but after watching THE MAIN EVENT ON BET and seeing the 50 million pound weight loss challenge I decided to join and my goal is to lose 50 pounds. To all my people struggling, remember all things are possible through GOD who strengthen us. GOOD LUCK!

fitfine40:

I just join 50$lb yesterday I need motivation of some kind. I use to work out almost daily until like two years ago then something happen. I didn't have any mojo left now I don't even look like myself. In the past year alone I gain 15 pounds in like six months. Yeah I caught myself and lost 8, but what happen to my mojo? Was it cause I turn 40, didn't have a man, didn't like my job can I please get a self with help diagnose?

ebonee:

i just joined the 50 million challange...i'm real excited about it...i've lost close to 20 lbs on my own and i plan on losing more...i'd love to receive some support through email and i'd love to give some...

Shawntae:

I wish everyone blessing during this journey. One trick that I use, is to order off the childresn menu when eating out. I have smaller portions and feel full without a huge plate of food in front of me. My next goal is to exercise daily.

FitFab40:

I've just joined the challenge after reading about it in Essence Magazine. I've become a big fan of Dr. Ian Smith after watching Celebrity Fit Club. As an active duty military member, fitness is not only crucial to my life but also to my career progression. Working long hours under stressful conditions have led to some really unhealthy habits. I finally made a true committment to myself to make a very much needed lifestyle change. One change that I am starting to see real benefits from is staying hydrated.I've noticed a great change in my skin, my digestive track and surprisingly in my sleep quality. While I'm not a big fan of ice, I am here to give a testimony to the awesome benefits of water!!
