Dr. Ian discusses The Challenge with Gayle King

Dr. Ian recently had an opportunity to discuss The Challenge with Gayle King, host of XM Radio's Oprah & Friends and editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine.  He asked her about the importance of African Americans losing weight and gaining control of their health through diet.  Her response focused on nutrition challenges she faced as a busy mom….

"As someone who's always trying to do better with their health, I think the goals of The Challenge are so extremely important. My biggest regret today when it comes to nutrition is that I didn't get it right with my children. I'm not a cook. My idea of a great meal was Spaghetti-O's from the can. I can make scrambled eggs and cheese, and pancakes from the Bisquick box. I wonder how things would have transpired if I would have started talking to my kids at an early age about the joys of broccoli, or how spectacular spinach is...and isn't a carrot a cool thing to eat?  If I would have started that at a very early age, they would have very different eating habits because we control our kids' diets when they're little. You can sell them on the beauty of a vegetable and healthy eating. So if I had to do it differently, nutritionally, I would have raised them in a very different way."

Neisha:

I am 170 lbs, and until recently had been twenty pounds heavier since the birth of my first daughter in 1998. After the birth of my second daughter in 2004 I was at my highest weight 209 lbs and also given the burden of High blood pressure. Now that I am 6 months shy of my 30th birthday. I am trying to become healthier and ultimately get to my goal weight of 150 lbs. The first 20 lbs were a breeze but this past week has been difficult to stay on track. my exercise habits are good but not where i would like them to be.
My healthy eating habits are starting to slip from my grip. I have to do this not only for myself but for my familty. I want to be around to see them grow and succeed. Please say a prayer...

Too young to feel this old:

I am a 42 year old mother of two. I've had two spinal fusions, back issues for 22 years, I have fibromyalgia, the arthritis of a 75 year old woman and I'm currently at least 100 lbs overweight. I'm misserable and tired of feeling this way but especially tired of looking this way. I am a beautiful person inside and I'm ready for the outside to match. I want to look good in a bathing suit, at least not hard to look at :) I have been very happily married for almost 12 years to a wonderful man who loves me for me. What am I waiting for????? This is going to be the year, my year to get back to being me. I'd love to find an online chat room for support. I think that would be helpful for my jouney. Anyone know of one?? I feel better just being able to post this and it was helpful to read the others and know that there are many like me. I'd also like to chat with a few of them because I can relate to what they're saying.

Thanks,
Too Young To Feel This Old

Lorraine Dounceroux:

It seems as though I am afraid to lose weight. It's like whatever I am covering up will soon surface and I won't know how to deal with it. Whatever happened in my early years make me so frightful that I am afraid to deal with it. There are so many things I haven't done yet and I know I won't be able to do them carrying around such a large amt. of weight.

Tia:

I just recently turned "33", again, I have on many occasions committed to losing the weight, but somehow my motivation comes and goes. I have never had to be concerned with weight before but now the table have turned on me....badly. I joined this challenge as a committment to myself to do this no matter what. I remember me at my best and I miss her. One day at a time, one pound at a time, and hopefully with the help of millions of individuals who share the same goal, I can meet that girl and again and keep her around for a very long healthy time to come.

I would like to tell everyone who is having a hard time to keep pushing, it gets greater later. I am a former college athlete who has trouble maintaing a target weight. I'll gain weight getting near to 300lb then work out, or when it gets cold do nothing. I do this all while my eating habits stay the same. I love to eat good food, I can cook, love vegetables, but will eat things that I shouldn't frequently. When the weathter heats up I'll workout in warm/hot conditions and reduce my bread, cheese, meat, and egg intake. I want all to know that the heavier and older you get the harder, but don't let it dicourage you. Take it day to day week to week fight have guts and heart. Find a inspiration while you are pushing music, kids, a longer healthy life a bible verse whatever and you will feel better sooner than you think. Sincerely 6'5 275 big butt, big gut and losing.

morning:

I am a 63 year old grandma. I am again looking for the woman who has been hiding in my body for years. I really want to meet her again. I've met her on several occasions over the years. I know she would like to stay longer but for some reason she leaves too soon.
I would really like to go into my older years with her in front and me behind. I'm hopeful that this will be that time.

MORNING,

Krystee:

I am 33 years old and since I have had my two beautiful children and been diagnosed bipolar, I have had weight challenges. I was an all star athlete in high school and played Co-ed softball up until last year. I am ashamed of my body. I get looks that I should NOT be out there. And, maybe I shouldn't right now, but I do want to get back out there and love the game that I grew up playing. My other love! My knees have had four surgeries. I am too young for all of this. My doctor says I am having the problems of a 60 year old because of my weight. I am 5'5 and 289 pounds. I know that I can get under 200 pounds, I have done it before, I just don't have the time, OR rather I don't make the time to work out. My children are also hovering on the heavy side. I don't want them to go through what I have gone through the last 5 years of my life.

Hurting Much:

U am 44yrs old with 5 children, and I am obese. I am 5 feet, five and a half inches, and I tip the scales at 300lbs, maybe a little more. I do not know my exact weight because I refuse to get on the scale since I feel so ashamed of myself and very embarassed over my weight. It has gotten to the point that my problems with asthma has increased, and my feet and legs hurt badly after work. I am often told that I am very pretty, have a beautiful personality and carry my weight nicely. Eventhough I appear to be Okay with my weight, deep down iside I am not. Because of the way that I act, no one would ever believe that I feel the way that I do. This is something that I have always kept to myself. I have never shared this feeling with anyone.

Carita Jones:

I was a size 8 for years, now I am having problems with my weight. I have really bad back problems which is increasing because of my weight most of my weight problems is my mid section. I wanted to find out what I could do about this problems I have.

DeAnna:

I just had a baby last year in October and I gained over 40 pounds. I went 130 pounds wearing a size 4/6 to 170 pounds and wearing a size 10/12 and this weight gain is driving me crazy. I have joined a gym to get me started with the exercising, but my eating habits or horrible. I need some help and encouragement with losing wieght and eating right! I just joined the challenge on August 7, 2007 and I am very excited to get started to reaching my ideal weight goal! Keep me in your prays for while I tackle this wieght lost.

Elecia Malone:

I am 5"6 and my weight is 185. I am 53 years young. I have tried to lose some pounds I have lost 2 I have changed my diet but the weight is not coming off like I want it too. Please help.

eloise jones:

I had lost 45 pounds by walking in 2003 and have since put it all back on because on a car accident in 2006. My life has been a yo yo with dieting. I cannot seem to get motivated this time for some reason. I weigh 275 lbs. 5ft. 61/2 inches. I am joining up with you today for HELP!

eloise

Natalie:

To Janet: Please don't be discouraged! Your 1lb a week is 52lbs in a year...weight loss isn't a sprint and if it takes longer to come off, the longer it'll stay off. IF you have plateaued it is time to amp up the exercise. Do you walk? It's easiest and cheapest, maybe 30 min, 3x/wk to start. Whatever you're doing for exercise now, change it or increase the amount you're doing, you'll see those pounds move again!! Good luck and don't give up, you deserve the very best you!

TIGGER3:

I'M EXCITED ABOUT THIS CHALLENGE MY HUSBAND TOLD ME ABOUT THE SITE AND I HAVE LOST 5 POUND SINCE MAY 31,2007 I'M TRING TO GET TO MY IDEAL WEIGHT ON MY OWN BY EATING RIGHT AND EXERCISNG HELP ME TO STAY ENCOURAGED AND PRAY THAT I REACH MY GOAL.

Melva Brown:

I'm excited about this challenge. I lose an gain the same 10-15 pounds over the last 3 years. Having lost both parents to heart disease, I try to eat right, watching the salt, sugars, and fried foods. Pray for me as I really desire to loose much more than 15 lbs. I'm walking 4-5 miles 5-6 days a week. I will weigh on tomorrow and update my progress. I will also pick up my packet tomorrow as I signed up last Saturday.

This is going to be awesome!
I want to live and take care of what God has blessed me with.

Good Luck to all in this journey to lose all of the unwanted pounds that we are carrying. I picked up my kit and I am ready and willing to give it a try and keep it off. God Bless everyone and GOOD LUCK!!!

Nicole:

I signed up for the Challenge about two weeks ago, but just really kicked my eating and excercising into gear in the last week and a half and have lost six pounds so far. I used to avoid the scale b/c it depressed me, but finally looking at the scale and seeing the needle move in the direction I want it to has motivated me to stick with my routine and kick it up another notch. I wish success for all of you that have accepted the challenge and look forward to reading more of your postings.

C. Carmon:

I would just like to encourage everyone here. I started Dr. Ian's Fat Smash diet in January way before the 50 million pounds challenge. I have gone from 230 to 175 pounds. It's really all about focus. If you follow the plan EXACTLY, I promise you will see results. If you are having trouble on the original Fat Smash, I recommend the Fat Smash extreme diet. It is a little more regimented, but it REALLY works so well. That is the way I lost the last 10 pounds. Good luck. It is so important that we as a community work on being healthy. It's not easy, but it's worth it and in the end it feels so good. God Bless You all and I will keep you in my prayers. We are all in this together.

MichelleK:

I just registered for the 50 Million Pound Challenge today. Over the past several months I have started and stopped several healthy living lifestyles. I don't like to call them diets because diets don't work, but eating healthy and exercising are supposed to be a lifestyle change. Anyway, I knew that I had gained over 30 pounds in the last year and a half (stess/emotional related eating)and needed to lose weight but I just couldn't stick with any regimen. In 1998, I was the same exact weight I am now, 220lbs. I made a decision to lose the weight using Bob Greene's (Oprah's trainer) method. It worked like a charm. I lost 45lbs and I kept the weight off until a year and a half ago. Well, after attending a barbecue this past saturday and looking at a picture of myself on camera phone someone had taken of me, I was astonished at how fat I was. Last night, I happen to stumble upon a show about a 627lb woman and a 1072lb man, yes 1072lbs! Both of these individuals had lost a considerable amount of their weight. And then this morning, there was Dr. Ian again on the Steve Harvey Morning Show talking about the 50 Million Pound Challenge. I said ok, that's it I got the message, I am committed to losing the weight again. If a 627lb woman and a 1072lb man can lose more than half their weight, I can surely lose 60lbs. God Bless and Good Luck to everyone.

aleshia:

I have always loved watching Celebrity Fit Club and loved how upfront Dr. Ian is with the individuals on the show. Thank you Steve - for talking about 50 Million Pounds on your show a while back.

During my pregnancy last year (2006), I gained a total of 40 pounds in my pregnancy. We had our son in Oct '06 - he weighed 9 lbs and 5 ounces. After having our son and being released by my physician, I started walking, but that did not get the weight off. On January 2, 2007 - I started with a personal trainer to get the weight off - it was the best Christmas gift that anyone could receive - an extra step to a healthy life and lifestyle.

From January 1 - April 30, I lost a total of 30 lbs. Training 3 times a week and on my off days for cardio. The trainer went over foods, exercises, etc. Having a trainer was a real motivation. Presently, I have lost a total of 35 lbs - I have 5 lbs to go to get to my pre-pregnancy weight.

I would like really to encourage everyone, just to take one day at a time, remember it did not take one day to put the weight on so not all of it will fall off at once; it really takes time, work and determination. Make small goals - say “this week my goal is to lose 2 lbs” - because when you say I have to be this size by this time it can be a bit over welling. So smaller goals are much better and remember to treat yourself when you reach your goal – i.e. more exercise clothes – ones that show off the new figure, go on vacation, get a pedicure/manicure, massage, etc.

Stay encourage and determined.

I was so excited to learn of the challenge while reading a jet book. I immediately accessed the website. I typically do eat healthy but had no desire for "portion control". I'm currently following a weight loss program and have incorporated exercise. I feel so rejuvenated after exercise and my body actually craves exercise. I have sent the challenge to other people and encouraging them to join. Thus far I have lost 9.4 lbs and shooting for the BIG 10 this week.

I pray that we don't grow weary in our well doing. Remember 3John2.

Be Blessed and Stay Focus
Remember give up the pounds not the fight!

Ms. S:

I am having the same problem as many of you. I am GAINING weight. What's really going on? I thought about giving up but the exercise makes me feel good and the veggies that I've been eating lately taste great. I guess I have to do this just for the health of it.

Rachel M:

Well I picked up my free kit today from my local State Farm office. I turned 40 this past April and after having nine and ten pound babbies over nine years ago, I have finally decided to take it off! I have a goal of 87lbs. that would put me at 158lbs. by Christmas. my husband will join me with only 35lbs. to lose but it will be nice to have him experiencing this with me. I applaude all of the wonderful people who have made the choice to shed the extra pounds for a healthier happier life. Exercise is key! I eat well but I have to admit that my life hjas become quite sedentary. So, I just want to encourage all to get moving!! Blessings!!

2B159:

I joined the 50 mil challenge on 5/16. At this time I have not lost any weight, actually I have put on 5lbs. This is because I was not committed to changing my eating habits. I would occasionally go to the gym, but not on a regular basis. I got a real good look at myself from the rear today. I realized that this extra weight does not look good coming or going...I just need it to be gone. I see that people are really doing it, the challenge, that is and it's working..Thanks for the inspiration to get back on track and do this darn thang.I have Dr. I's "Fat Smash" now my desire is to smash the fat. Wish me luck on my journey.. Thanks

Dondiva40:

I enjoyed reading the other postings to see what types of things others were doing for exercise and eating habits. Like some of them I've tried other diets including the Fat Smash Diet, which I did see results but because I didn't continue the exercise and eating healthy habits and went back to my old bad habits I've put on even more weight. My body seemed to work like a sponge. Not only did I put back on the weight that I lost but I've added to it and although my index states overweight, I'm feeling totally obese. I recently changed jobs and I know it is just another excuse but I think it is just stress. I'm looking forward to sticking to this new challenge. Thanks for the support!

Anita:

I am enjoying the weight loss challenge. I've lost 22lb since 4/19/07. It didn't start off very well because I was not committed to exercise as I am now. I feel good from the inside-out (if that makes any since). My greatest challenge is working 3rd shift. I've made it a ritual to go straight to the gym in the morning when I get off work. Tired or not. I always feel so awake after 20 min on the treadmill. I do 2 miles on the treadmill and 10min on the eliptical machine and some weights,4 to 5 days a week. I feel I can stay committed with this ritual. Any sound advise for us 3rd shift workers?

F:

Theresa,

Hitting a plateau is your body's way of telling you that it has become so efficient at your current program that you need to switch it up. I suggest incorporating intervals into your walk on the treadmill. Wrrm up for 5 mins, then do 2 mins at a fast pace (85% of your target heart rate) and then 2 mins a little slower (60% of your target heart rate), do this at least 10 times and then cool down for 5 minutes. Also, take another look at your food choices. The simple fact is that if you are putting on a few pounds, you are consuming more calories than you need. That happens to me sometimes, and when it does I take extra care to measure all my portions, count my calories, and do 360 minutes of cardio a week at 10 cals/minute. That guarrantees me a 3600 calorie burn and since to lose a pound I know I have to burn 3500 calories, it guarrantees me at least a 1 pound loss a week, but usually it is way more.

Hope that helps!

Shannon:

I just signed up for the challenge today 6/13/07 however I started going to the gym 2 weeks ago. I am very excited and motivated to lose 75-80lbs. I haven't purchased Dr. Ian's Smash Diet book but now that I have read positive things about the diet, I will be going to purchase it after work today. I feel the key to successful weight loss is exercise...period! I thank God that I work at a company that belives in health and well being of mind and body. I have access to a gym, kickboxing, pilates and cycling classes. There is no excuse for me not to work out. I love going to kickboxing and will start a cycling class tomorrow. I feel bad now if I don't go to the gym and I want to always keep that feeling to help motivate me. Nothing in life is EASY so stay strong everybody and keep on keeping on! A healthy life is a happy life!

Denise:

Making small changes and better choices has showed improvements. I now think twice about what I decide to put in my body and I've lost 4 pounds thus far and my confidence has already increased.

Vicky:

I have been researching Diets, Fitness, Weight loss, and Nutrition for several years. I tried for two years and could not lose the weight. I finally found out that part of my problem was diabetes. I have now been put on medication by my doctor and learned about portion sizes. I now eat more nutritious foods and exercise and I have lost fifty pounds. My point is when I started buying and cooking more nutritious foods and sugar free drinks my son (who is now 18) began eating and drinking the same things I did. I was surprised that he did not mind diet soda or more vegetables on his plate. Sometimes all it takes is for us to provide better choices for our kids and they will conform to the change.

Angela:

I put in wt/hgt and ended up on the obese side of the scale. I knew that I was big but seeing it in black and white made me realize that I have to do something to change. I have been trying to lose weight for about 10 years. I am going to give this challenge my all because I don't want to end up like my relatives when I get older and be faced with the many different health issues. I also want to be around for my children and teach them what healthy eating habits can do for them.

Carole Tate :

My husband has been asking me to check out the 50 million lb challenge. I finally got around to it today and when I put in my weight/height I came up on the obesity end of the scale. This has hit home for me today, I have been in denial about how much I weigh even though almost everything I own is too tight. I purchased a pedometer over the weekend and today is a new beginning for me health wise. It is not about losing the weight I want to live a healthier life for me, my husband and my children.

Diane:

I started the challenge on 6/8/07. My current weight is 171lbs and i'm trying to reach a goal weight of 145lbs. I am very confident that i will reach my fitness goal with the help of the Fat Smash Diet Plan, it's been easy to follow and i'm already feeling the results.

GEM:

Well I have been in need of a challenge to get myself started. I went to a weight doctor only to find out when I go there that it was one of those liquid diet things, which basically is not for me. I need to chew. To date I have lost 8lbs which is not a lot, but for me it's an accomplishment since it points in the right direction and it hasn't been extremely hard. I work 2 jobs and most nights when I get home I am too tired to cook, so like a lot of busy people I grab the first thing I see and then go to bed. That was the first thing I stopped. I now take something with me (a salad, fruit, cereal) so that I can eat before I get home. Just this one change has helped a lot. Now I plan to start addressing some of the other bad eating habits I have developed over the years and get back to eating more healthy foods and less fats and hi calorie stuff.

Thanks for the jump start and support.

Crearergirl:

I have just started the challenge and I am so excited. I went to the gym today and I felt good. This is my first day at the gym in a year and a half, oh boy it was hard but I kept going, not too fast but I stayed for the full 55 mins, wow. Looking forward to another day tomorrow.

Tori:

I was surprised at how fast the weight began to come off with simple steps of cutting down the amounts I eat in one sitting. I also included more fruits and veggies in my diet as as snacks. I don't drink any sodas and I still have can's of Pepsi at my desk that I don't drink and I don't feel tempted. Since I joined the challenge on 6/5/07 I've lost 6lbs and the exercise has been minimal. Just stairs at work and walking. I do still struggle sometimes but when I'm tempted I only eat very little and it hasn't hurt me yet.

Shandel:

Since the beginning of this year I have been trying to lose 15 to 20 lbs, I am about 185 trying to get to 165 anything under 170 would be great. After last weeks Steve Harvey’s show I am joining as of today 06/11/2007 to lose 15lbs in 4 weeks which mean 7/06/2007 I will be 170 lbs oh will I look GOOOOOOD. See you in a week.

Rashael:

I'm just joining the program, I wt 225lbs. I'm looking to losing 50lbs. I'm going out to buy the 2 books. I hope they will help me. I never tried a diet before.

Tillie:

I think everyone is doing a great job by just starting something. I beginning my new life transition as of Feb 1st 2007 after my doctor recommended me to have a weight lost surgery. I declined right away, but it gave me something to think about. I weighed in on 1/30/07 at 330lb at this time I am down to 273 which is a total lost of 57lb and I still have a weight lost goal of 115ilb over this next year. I have gained my success from the fat smash diet book and now I have moved up to the extreme fat smash. Everyone keep your head because as a community we can afford to lose over 50million pounds over a 2yr period.

Go team Go!!!!!!!!

LaQuanda:

I started wanting to eat better when I went to see my doctor in April and the scale showed 311 pounds.. I went from working a job for seven years on my feet to sitting down seven years at a new job. Im currently 289 pounds my goal is 200 pounds. Please keep up the good work people you keep me motivated. I have lost 22 pounds thank You.

3rd shift worker:

Dr. Ian I work 12 hours-night shift 11:30 to 11:30,I get home about 12:30. I don't get much sleep. Help me with trying to get exercise in with the little time that I have If I walk for a hour and than go to sleep is that good or what. Help

c r-wright:

I didn't have to tell anyone that I changed my eating habits. Family noticed I had lost weight (20lbs with Dr Ians Fat Smash Plan-9 day plan). So when I saw the challenge I signed up and bought the Extreme Fat Smash Book. I can't believe I exercise!! and I'm addicted to it. My husband and daughter have joined in. We go to the gym no less than 5 nights a week for at least an hour. My weight is coming off slower but the shape of my body has change dramatically. My large stomach is almost gone. The exercise is a key part. I think I have found something that I can follow.

susan:

Like Janet, I do not see any changes in the scale but I was eating healthy and doing my exercises even before I joined the program. I am not giving up because I have hope. I do feel differences in my clothes so I know I have lost some inches. My main goal is to tone up but I also want to lose between 10 and 15 pounds and I know I can do it.

Janet, just believe in yourself.

Bri:

I just started this diet also last Tuesday and I really feel great. I am going to wait until my 9 days to weight myself, but I really, really feel good and I feel good in my clothes. I have tried a lot of diets, and I am only successful in the diet if I stay committed. I was watching Oprah 1 day and she was saying that all diets work if you stay committed. Staying committed is the key and I myself have had a hard time staying on track. I am really hoping that I can stay on track with this diet. I really feel good about the food I am putting in my body and I know the results will be really good as long as I stay committed to this program. Good luck everyone, just trying is better than doing nothing.

Alicia Cheese:

I joined the challenge on May 31,2007, but I actually started dieting and exercising on June 4, 2007. I feel really good and confident about my goals with losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle. I actually gave myself 5 months to reach my weight loss goal of 50lbs. I am confident that I will be successful! Good luck to everyone!

kesha:

Well I've just joined today and will be ordering Dr. Ian's books, so pray for me as I will for all of us to stay focus, keep the faith, and don't give up.

Carol Collins:

I have been following the Fat Smash Diet and started some weight strengthing, but I am gaining and not losing weight.

LaTanya:

Theresa, Perhaps you need to change "your" diet and try a different one. Your body has probably adjusted to your current caloric intake and adjusted itself to live on that without burning any fat. I think if you tried Dr Ian's Smash Diet, or reduced your own current diet by 100 calories and up your exercise by 10 or 15 min's that should jumpstart your metabolism and get you past your palteau. Keep up the outstanding work 34lbs is a great accomplishment. I am inspired to keep the faith!!

De:

Well I have just picked up my starter kit,and my start day is 6-8-2007. I am excited about the commitment. It is my prayer I stay focused and consistent.

Trellis:

To Janet and everyone else...you have to remember what is your ultimate goal and you have to set small realistic goals for yourself. I think it is important to understand that we don't see every week of the show. The show is a 90-day program, so where you may see Kim has lost 20lbs. she may be in week 16. Janet I would encourage you get both books, the Fat Smash and the Extreme Fat Smash. They have helped me to stay on track I have lost 25lbs since April. I do have my bad days or weeks. When I hit a plateau, that's when I change up and go back to the detox stage or cycle 1 in the books. Hang in there sister WE are all here to support you!

Monica:

Janet, I understand the feeling. I lose inches before the dial on the scale moves. I'm excited that I can get into a dress that I bought two years ago (price tags still on) even though the scale has not moved. Keep the faith.

Collette:

Janet, please don't give up. Changing your life takes time. I know what I"m talking about. I lost 105 lbs. prior to this challenge. It is hard but it is worth your quality of life and possibly the length of your life. You have to stop focusing on the scale and focus on your health. That is the point that you asked about. The point is your health. If you take care of your health then the pounds follow. The extra weight you carry is a representation of how unhealthy you are, i.e. food and exercise. That's how I look at it. Take care of the inside and the outside follows. I hope my words are some form of encouragement and support. Take care of you.

Theresa Ross:

I work in the health care field and a lot of my job description includes transferring, lifting and transporting patients weighing up to and in excess of 350-500lbs. physically. I have terrible back problems as a result of this. I made up my mind about a year ago to refuse to allow myself to be put in that situation, forcing my colleagues or anyone else to have to do that for me. I then began a self imposed diet, weighing in at 264lbs. I have been faithfully following my own diet to date; however, I am beginning to lose confidence. I have lost 34lbs. which was the original weight loss and cannot seem to lose another ounce. I will quickly gain a lb or two, but never lose anymore. I exercise on my treadmill daily, my job keeps me on my feet and running non stop for 12 hours a day; so I am very active. I don't understand nor do I know what else I can do. Please help!!!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Myra:

This is really motivational! I've been trying to lose 15 lbs for 5 years with absolutely no success. In the first week, I've lost 3 lbs.
15 lbs doesn't seem like a lot, but after losing both parents to obesity related illnesses, I realize how dangerously easy and fast 15 can turn into 50, and 50 into 100.
Everybody, keep up the good work and don't give up! Good health and quality of life are the most important things we can give ourselves AND our families.

Rosemary:

I know how you feel Janet, I felt the same way. However, although I was not seeing the same results on the individuals on Celebrity Fit Club, I was feeling better and had more energy. One of the things we have to keep in mind when watching shows like Celebrity Fit Club and the Biggest Loser is that all of the participants are constantly monitored and helped to reached their goals. In the real whole, most people are not going to be dropping weight like that. That is why every healthy study you see will tell you that you should only lose 1-2 lbs per week. So don't give up, you will reach your goals.

Kim:

Janet don't be discouraged. 1 to 2 pounds a week is a good thing. Slow and steady wins the race. It takes time to lose weight you didn't put this weight on overnight and you are not going to lose it overnight. Don't stop keep going I've lost 21 pounds and I've never lost more than 3 pounds a week. Hang in there.

SHS:

I'm definitely a believer in the Challenge! My twelve year old and I have been at it since April 9 and have lost a combined total of 30 lbs. We not only used the website dietary guide but also, got the book "The Fat Smash Diet". We incorporated a lot of the recipes in the book to stay on track (easy and inexpensive). Also, the excercise regimine is great! At first, it was tough but now we're both up to an hour a day, 5 to 6 times a week.

Thanks Dr. Ian for championing the health crisis in our community!

janet:

This challenge thing is hard. I am trying to incorporate better nutrition with my family. I see on the celebrity fit challenge that those people are losing a subsantial amount of weight compared to my measly 1 pound a week after I have changed my eating habits. I am a bit discouraged because I have reached a plateau. What's the point if changing your nurtrition means that you will reach a plateau? Ugh!!!
