Going Local – Tell us about your Local Programs!

The Challenge is about the community coming together to get healthy and share our strength.  As the Challenge Tour travels the country, we want to help spread the word about ongoing local community fitness efforts.  Please help us.

If you coordinate or participate in a local community fitness program, share the information on our Blog or send an email to Contact Us.  For example, Dr. Ian joined the Power Saturday Walking Club in Cleveland.  The group meets every other Saturday morning and is sponsored by the local Power to End Stoke campaign and WZAK 93.1 FM.  These types of efforts are a great way to get into shape as a community.  We’re particularly interested in hearing from Houston, Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago or Milwaukee as we’ll be heading there later this summer, but we want to hear about successful efforts like this all across the country.

I recently participated in a hospital sponsored weight loss program that taught me to eat atleast 5 fruit and vegetables a day, excercse atleast 30 minutes each day, and replace one of my meals with a low-calorie meal replacement (i.e., low-fat shake or frozen low-fat entree), and most importantly keep records and set daily goals. I try to plan my meals in the morning and keep low-fat snacks around that prevent me from going through drive-thru windows. Over time it became easier and it pays off. I can 1-3 pounds a week. So it is not about quick weight but changing to a healthy lifestyle. Weight loss is a bonus!

Hello Everyone,

Much success to all of you trying the 50 Million Pound Challenge!!! Once I saw the challenge on TV I felt sooo good inside! We (as people of color) really need a forum to express our weight concerns without feeling embarrassed. I also believe that accurate information is key to success. With that said, I have a question.

I've been fixing fresh vegetable shakes and fruit shakes in my blender. This special blender came with a variety of whole food, fruit, and vegetable recipes, which appear to be very healthy; all fresh fuit or vegetables. In most of these recipes honey is used as a natural sweetner. Is honey okay to use? If so, what quantity amount is acceptable? Can I have honey everyday? If so, how many times a day can I make a shake (fruit or vegetable) with honey?

Two times a day is my max, when eating five SMALL meals. I use the fuit shake or the vegetable shake as a small meal (between 8oz -12oz.). It also helps me to get in the USDA vegetable and fruit requirements. Which for me and my age range would be 4 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables a day.

So, simply put should I contiue doing the shakes without the use of honey or with? Just as a note to the readers suprisingly enough a cup of spinach and a few slices of fresh pineapples or 4 oz of unsweetend pineapple juice taste really good, once blended with ice. You don't even taste the spinach, just mmmmmm good! I also noticed when reading over this website that you suggest to stay way from pineapples "some fruits are better than others when trying to lose weight".

Dr. Ian Smith, what do you suggest?

Hi All:

I live in Harlem and would love to join a group, and/or start a group for the challenge. It's even more challenging when your out there with others lifting them up during the challenge. If you reside in Harlem and ready for the challenge, the meeting place is morningside park, Saturday 7:00 am. See you there!!!

Here's too a healthier US!!!!

I've been blessed to have a group of two (1 man and 1 woman) to help me. Sometimes I have been slipping (eating or working out) from time to time and we all help each other. I try to get back on track and stay on track. We are all single parents in N. VA. and we try to get together as often as possible. But if anyone has tips on how to keep the workout fresh and new or ways to push pass that point in time were you have stopped losing. Please let me know. I know my slipping isn't helping but I am only human.

The YMCA is having a grand opening this Saturday morning (June 23, 2007). I went there last week to take a bellydancing class with a friend. The teacher was a beautiful full-figured African-American woman with so much confidence that she was glowing. She was AWESOME. Her class is on Thursday morning at 10am and her name is Janna or Jhana or something like that. She's really nice. I liked it so much that I joined up. The first month is free. Membership isn't that bad either. I'm excited because they have an indoor walking track, Zumba, kickboxing, bellydancing, water classes and a bunch of really cool classes....they have kid classes for my children plus a nursery. Anyway, the phone number for the Y is 954-989-9622. It's located in Hollywood, Florida. They also have classes for seniors too for anyone who thinks aerobics is too fast or too hard. Anyway, I feel the pounds melting away already. Good luck everyone!!!

Just a comment for Jennifer....I think one of the keys to weight loss is to "get moving" and burn calories. It may sound easy but I know it's not. I walk....and I don't mean at a slow pace, try to walk at a steady & speedy pace.

Start out walking for at least 20 minutes and work up to at least 30 minutes. It is important to burn calories so be sure to work up a sweat..walk with some upbeat music it always help. Don't forget about what you put in your body....try to stay away from fried foods and sweets at first and drink lots of water (this will also help to curb your appetite). It a start but I'm sure you will see effects soon.

Just some helpful advice.....good luck and never forget how beautiful you already are!!!!

jennifier:

i am a very beautiful woman but i cant keep my figure very good so can you give tips to help with me and other men and women

Catora Bell:

Greetings everyone,

I live in West Palm Beach, Florida and I am in search of groups in the area that are taking part in this challenge.

I am interested in joining some walking/workout groups. I am considerd obese 4'11" tall 210 lbs. I would really love to concour this goal and change my lifestyle so that I can reap the benefits of a healthier life & this challenge as well. My family has a history of medical problems associated with being over weight and I am headed in that direction if I don't make a change soon.

If you are out there and ready to concour this battle w/me, please let me know.

Catora

Tamara:

Hello everyone,
I live in Dallas and would love to know others in the area that are taking part in this great challenge.

I would love to spread the word in the Dallas area of the great benefits of the challenge as well. I work in the home health field and am very fearful of what is happening in our black community with the epidemic of high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

I have lived a healthy lifestyle all my life and know it can have it's challenges but the outcome is so beneficial. Please let me know if there are others out there that have ideas as to how we can make a difference in the Dallas Metroplex.

Take care and stay healthy :)

Tamara
