Keep a food journal

Writing down what you eat, how much you eat, and when you do your exercise is a great way to keep you on the right track. Jot down the times you feel hungry or tired or irritable just because you want that piece of chocolate. Journaling can be a great tool to keep you honest and expose the bad habits that are interfering with your weight-loss efforts. Don't look at it as a chore, but as a strategy to better understand your habits and a way to make smarter decisions.

Journaling can give you insight into when and why you do certain things or react in certain ways. Think of it in sports terms, journaling is part of what scouts do to learn their opponents and help the coaches devise a strategy to win the game. Similarly, we can learn to control our habits once we better understand ourselves.

The Ancient Greeks lived by the principle "know thyself" to get a handle on themselves and their situations. So I encourage you to journal and "know thyself" as you develop strategies to better your lifestyle. Best ~ Dr. Ian

Hello everyone:

I just joined the 50 Million Pounds challenge today. I used to be with Weight Watchers and we had to write in a journal. I did not know I ate as bad as I did until I saw what I wrote. Needless to say, I gained the 10 pounds I lost back. I did not know how active I was with only 10 pounds lost, until I found my journal and saw how active I was. I used to walk, do exercise tapes, clean more and use the tread mill often. Now I notice all I want to do is sit in front to of the TV and dictate to my kids what I need. I am starting my journal again, the hard part is being honest in it. But it worked because I would change my habits when I saw that it did not look so great.

Thanks to this website for letting me know that I am not alone and this is not only hard for me, but for other people also.

BrownEyz:

Dr. Ian,

I STARTED THE CHALLENGED IN APRIL, AND I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER. I WORKOUT EVERYDAY. I MAKE SURE I EAT RIGHT, GET ENOUGH SLEEP, AND I DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. I FEEL LIKE I'VE LOST A PERSON. I FELT SO TIRED WHEN I WAS HEAVIER, AND NOW I FEEL LIKE I CAN DO ANYTHING. I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF. NOW I CAN GO TO THE MALL AND I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT STRANGERS STOPPING ME AND TELLING ME HOW FAT I'VE GOTTEN. IN FACT, NO ONE STOPS ME ANYMORE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW PEOPLE CAN TELL YOU HOW BAD YOU LOOK, AND WHEN YOU LOOK BETTER YOU DON'T SEE THOSE PEOPLE ANYMORE. I GO TO THE MALL ALOT AND NO ONE STOPS TO TELL ME HOW NICE I LOOK. I AM NOT GOING TO GAIN ANY OF MY WEIGHT BACK, BECAUSE I KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE.

THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO

Vivian Gomez:

Weight loss has been the hardest challenge I have had so fa. I am currently 58 and in good health. I was skinny during my teens and twenties, and couldn't gain weight, no matter what I ate. In my thirties, I finally got to be the ideal weight for me which was 155, since I am 5'6'. Once I passed age 55 my weight started to accelerate, until I was 183 lbs. and I realized this was not where I wanted to be. My clothes did not fit me the way I wanted, and my joints started to hurt for no reason at all. I am now participating in the 50 million pound challenge, just to prove that I have the will power to do it. Since July 5, 2007 I have gone from the 183 to 179 and intend to lose at least another 10-15 pounds. I feel better, and want to encourage persons over 55 to join me in the challenge, and hopefully we can support one another. Thank you.

Homegirl:

I began a weight loss journey about 3 1/2 years ago. One of the things I did was to start journaling my food intake. I have found that when I do journaling consistently, I lose weight because I'm really tracking what I eat. When I don't journal, I have fooled myself into thinking that I'm tracking when I stop journaling until I see the pounds coming back. I know now that I do need to keep journaling and I believe that it will keep me honest on and on the right path to losing weight.

JUANITA DOBSON:

I think journaling is an excellent idea to track your weight loss. It gives you motivation and it allows you to see your bad habits as well! Writing down your emotions when you eat is a great way to see if you are an emotional eatter.

Another tip I have tried that actually works. Is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, I can not stress the importance of consuming water! It is calorie densed and it has more than one benefit! Please don't over hydrate to the point that you are losing good electrolyte balance.

Reachmygoal:

Journalizing what you eat is a great tool to stop you from eating too much. When I know I have to write it down I think twice about what I am going to eat. In addition, planning meals and writing down the meal plan will helps me to stay on track. I journalize with meal times in mind this helps me not to graze which is one of my biggest problems. I lost 120 pounds before the weight loss challenge, now I want to lose 60 more but I reached a platu and am having a hard time pushing past it, so I am going to go back to journalizing and I know this will help tremendously

Stay focused

Hey Everyone;
Iam 40 year old mother of three teenagers, work on the computer all day, sit in front of the T.V. all night while reading what a life! I topped the scale at 400lbs 2yrs ago, luckly obesity was my only disease I did not suffer from high blood presure or diabetes. I too like many went to the doctor one day & my BP was elevated after that I decided enough is enough and got moving. I lost down to 270lbs first trying Atkins then South Beach & exercise. Well, I got to comfortable and slowly went back to bad eating habits & guess what, I found myself back at 347lbs. So I refused to see 400lbs again. Dr. Ian's Challage came along at the right time & gave that extra push I needed to change gears. I am at 315 now! So look I mentioned all of this to say even if you go in reverse it is never to late change gears back to drive, & keep going forward.

As Ever;
Nita

Atheshia Hamilton:

I just turned 30years old on July 5th, I am a single working mother and I need to be apart of this movement.

My mother, Veronica Hamilton passed way on January 22, 2007 of heart failure. She had sugar diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. She was 53 years old and didn't give herself a chance at life, because she ate whatever she wanted, never worked out and her motto was "If this doesn't kill me, something else will!".

Needless to say, I don't want this to be my daughters story of me when she is my age.
I have been over weight since 2003 and enough is enough. I am ready to take that first step to a new and improved life and I am so greatful for this challenge. I need inspiration in my life and God willing, one day my story might inspire someone else.

CH:

Journaling is a great idea when trying to manage your weight. I used to journal when I first joined the gym, but I got lazy and stopped. This was the reminder I needed. I am starting back today. When I was keeping a log of the food I was intaking, I started eating less junk food. I didn't want to have to write it in the journal (because I knew I shouldn't have it) so I didn't eat it. I also kept track of my activity (duration and calories burned). When I got the urge to splurge (over-indulge)I'd calculate how much more cardio I'd have to do in order to burn off those calories. Journaling is an excellent idea. Thanks for the reminder.

Lady V:

Hello Dr. Ian and All Participants,

Keeping a food journal is proving to be one of the best tools for me since I've begun my journey toward better health.

My doctor suggested I keep one but I thought it was corny and lame. I felt like I knew what I was eating on a daily basis and didn't have time to write it down. Then my weight started soaring and I didn't know why because I didn't think I'd been eating any differently than normal. I went on my health provider's website for tips on weight management and they also suggested keeping a food journal.

I tried it. Whenever I ate something, whether good or bad, I wrote in my journal with the number of servings, calories and fat grams. After about a week of keeping track, I started to notice patterns in my eating habits. For example, if I don't pack a lunch to take to work, I'll go to a fast food restaraunt and get something quick and not really satisfying. Then a couple hours later I'm hungry again, and because I didn't bring any healthy snacks I go to the vending machine and get some chips and a pop.

Now that I know what my challenges are, I try to plan ahead for busy days, and keep some good snacks nearby to hold me over. I still have a long way to go, but I'm glad to be going. And I'm glad to have useful resources to help me reach my goals.

I urge everyone to try journaling for at least a week. It will help you pinpoint areas where you may be struggling, and then you can start looking for solutions to those problems.

Love Ya'll!

Lady V
