Healthy holiday and resolution tips from Dr. Ian

The holidays are here and with them come great recipes and meals. I’ve read your blog comments and know that many of you are looking for some extra health tips. Here’s a handful you can implement this season and commit to through the New Year.

Healthy holiday and resolution tips:

  • Eat four servings of fruits and vegetables (combined) per day. One serving is about the size of your fist.
  • Keep up your exercise. Plan to exercise, anywhere and anytime, for 15 minutes a day three days a week. (It’s important to know and not exceed your maximum heart rate while working out. Here’s an easy calculation to find yours: 220 - your age = maximum heart rate.)
  • Limit eating fried foods to no more than four fried servings of food per week.
  • Switch to “brown” foods. Rotate brown rice and whole wheat bread or pasta into your recipes.
  • Manage and reduce your stress by doing something you enjoy for 30 minutes every day.

Take a moment after you’ve read through these tips to plan how you can adjust your recipes or schedules to keep your healthy momentum moving!

Yours in The Challenge.

I am a college student and have found that to be very helpful with regard to my exercise regimen. Before that it was Tae-bo which I accessed through On-Demand cable. The Tae-bo sessions are about 15 minutes long and quite intense. But don't get discouraged. Keep some water nearby and don't be afraid to stop and drink it!! You may only be able to do 5 minutes initially, but you will be able to build up your endurance (and while you are working on that you can always go half time with the reps, after all Billy Blanks can't see you.) The important thing for me was realizing that at some point I had to start doing something. As far as the college thing goes, I am in community college and there is a fitness center there. PE classes are usually only one credit hour so the cost is very low (much cheaper than a membership to a health club.) The other advantage is that the folks working there are properly trained. I was able to get assistance figuring out the proper weight to use for resistance training, tips on stretching and eating, and lots of help using the very confusing electronic cardio machines. And I get all that WITHOUT having to pay the additional cost for a personal trainer or a nutritionist. At my school the hours are 6:15a - 8p M-T, 6:15a - 6p F, and 8a - 4p Sa. You can usually take the classes pass/fail... Okay, can you tell I'm really trying to sell you on this?! I just hope it helps someone because it really helped me.

Returning to lose some weight. I am following the Extreme fat Smash diet, it works great for me. Already lost 4 pounds this week. Too, too much indulging on the holidays.

Dr. Smith

Thanks for your recommendation. I think what your doing is awesome and hopefully a lot of people will take the challenge and change their lifestyles for the long haul. I found an awesome company that provides great all-natural wholefood meals, smoothies, soups, and snacks. They make it easy for my entire family to get our recommended 5-servings of fruits (Fruitilicious)and veggies (Veggielicious Spice) right from the bag with no preparation. When I'm on the run I eat the wholefood meals (Phi Plus) which contains, fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, etc., - you name it it's in there. The meals are nutrient dense and very satisfying. If your looking for that next big thing - you have found it. It's called all-natural, USDA organic certified wholefood meals. I hope you get to try them. Please call me with any questions or to say hi. Check us out - I do expos, tasting parties, etc., - I have yet to run across anyone that didn't love these products.

Be blessed, I enjoyed sharing my awesome food fine with you. Feel free to email me, call me via my link on my web site:

Donna B.:

Dr. Smith,

I joined the 50 million pound challenge family back in June 2007, but didn't keep up with it at all. As a promise to myself for 2008, I will be very diligent in changing my lifestyle to a more healthy one. Although I don't have too much weight to lose, my struggle is maintaining a consistent exercise routine. Eating right most of the time is not very difficult for me as I am not much of a junk food eater. Can you suggest certain exercises that are easy (and fun) to do at home? Exercises for the lower body would be helpful.... THANKS!!!

Veronica:

Dr. Smith,
I am a single mother of three and my schedule is very busy between the children, school, work and church. I know I'm over weight and at this moment i do not have any health problems and do not want any. I constantly eat on the run and I don't feel good about myself at all. I need some help so I can look and feel my best and also be around for my children. I really don't know where to start. Please show me how. I need it.

Diane:

I,too, am diabetic, and find it challenging to curb my appetite; especially since I need to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks each day. Dr. Ian, can you advise me, and I'm sure others, how to achieve a balance? I know cuttings carbs is essential, but how do I cut the cravings?

Flora :

I have gained 5 pounds since I have joined and I am very discouraged. I have a hectic work schedule and can't get started exercising. My days are long and my husband wants us to have dinner together which means around 7pm. I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Marion J. Bogan:

I am a out of controll diabetic who is concerned about the impending state of my health. How do I put the brakes on myself and do right. I don't have a real support system but acknowledge that this is my responsibility I just can't kick my own butt and get into gear. Please help me with this problem.

Angela Williams:

Dr. Smith,
I joined the 50 Million Pound Challenge in Sept. 2007 and gained 5 pounds since then. I have to admit that I have not been doing my best and can do better. I have since joined a local group here in Buffalo, NY, the "Purple Divas" and will now see if having support from others can help me succeed and reach my goal weight.

Phyllis Rose:

Dr. Smith,
I would love to join the 50 million pound challenge and tried several times but without sucess. I started a health program last June 21. I have lost 50 lbs. and working toward 50 more lbs. but because I have not been able to sucessful with loogging on I have not been able to trsck my weight.
