Self-control -- A tip from Dr. Ian

If you want to stop eating a large serving of food, then cut it in half. On the half that you’re not going to eat, sprinkle something you don’t like, such as pepper, ketchup, mustard—anything that will ruin the flavor and stop you from eating it.

The point is this: build up your self-control. Ruining the flavor may be extreme, but it will help you succeed as it proves that you do not need a pile of food to get full. And, in the long run, exercising your self-control will generate a lifestyle change by creating habits you can rely on for many years down the road.

Best ~ Dr. Ian

Okay Guys, I am 60 years old. I think and sometimes act like a 28 year old. I mean I have friends who say I don't look old except for the weight. I weigh more than 350lbs. I have been saying I want to lose weight but, somehow I just can't get started. I have friends who say I can encoueage everyone else to do things but I can't encourage myself.I enjoy life and God has been so good to me. Bishop Long has taught me how to Mature in the Lord. How do I mature in weight loss? I would like to go on the liquid diet but that's to expensive. the Doctors say I need both my knees replaced, so exersize is not easy. My back is in constant pain, so walking is hard. Just as I was reading the other blogs I was eating 1/2 gal of ice cream. I would love to swim, go on picnics in the park, listen and dance to God's music, travel, entertain my friends, bless others with my time and help in whatever their needs are. Can someone show me the way? I need someone to take my hand and walk with me. I know that sounds very selfish and needy, but........I'm speaking the truth! I thank God for this 50 Million pound Challange because it has been the answer for so many people. I believe it's my answer too but I don't know which way to turn. Please forgive me for this Pity Party I am having. Pray for me.

@Adriane

I understand exactly how you feel. I recently lost me father and started eating everything in sight. That for me was part of the grieving process and I allowed myself to heal if eating gave me comfort. I just watched the type of foods that I ate, nothing fried and drank lots of water. Now one month later, I feel that I can focus on me and getting back on my weight loss program. To my surprise I only gained 3 and half pounds. I’m not going to bet myself up about it just not going to let myself stay in a funk. I still have good and bad days but just take one day at a time and you will feel better.

Marsha:

I too am trying to loose weight. I am going to join the 50Million Pound Challenge, but I went on the site and there is just so much to read. I had to have to go through all this information just to get to the main ideas. But I have been walking, I was so disappointed to see that walking burns only 200 calories per hour, no wonder the weight is taking so long. I have added a little jogging, hopefully, I'll see the improvement soon. I'm going to get a jump rope today.

Adriane Wilson:

I started July 2007 and was loosing at a steady pace. After the death of my mother on Christmas Eve, I just about gained all the weight back. I need help on getting back on track and continue to stay focus on my goal, which is 130lbs. I need all the suggestions I can get. It will be greatly appreciated.

Tasha:

I lost 97 pounds in 2005/06. When I started I was at 330. I went from a size 28 to a 18. I gained the weight back in the beginning of 07 after having a miscarriage 10/06. On 2/08 I was at 344 and I am now at 329. I workout at 24hr fitness anywhere from 3-6 days a week. I was diagnosed with pcos in feb 08 and thats when I knew I had to do something. My Dr told me I am also borderline diabetic and I simply need to loose weight. I have been eating veggies and baked foods. I also eat a lot of Michelina t.v dinners. The Lean Gourmet ones and they have very little calories. It has been ruff but with the help of GOD I know I can do it... if I did it once I can do it again.

ready to b serious:

I want to say to everyone that is doing this challange congrats. I hv been on my diet since January and I am so proud of myself expecially to know that I am doing this all on my own I hv lost 16 pounds. Since having my baby in June of 2007 i hv lost 40pounds. I am so happy. And to be honest I don't hv any support from anyone. I hv 4 kids and a husband and it is very hard. Breakfast and lunch is easy because i start my days with 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon and a cup of graprfruit juice. Lunch I eat pollo tropical chicken the chicken and veggies only because it is only grilled chicken and grapefruit juice. Now dinner is hard because i have a growing family so when I cook them steak and other things that I can't eat gets very hard, but I manage. My husband has 4 days off a wk so I go to the gym those 4dys for atleast 1 1/2. So since the strict diet in jan I feel so good. And my only support are you guys and Dr Ian who emails me from time to time. Thanks for all the support and I hope we all reach the goal that we have.

Naomi:

I started in December and haven't really started yet. I appreciated the emails from Dr. Ian because it was a constant reminder to me "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" so today I am going to really do what I need too and start loosing weight. It was nice reading all the other blogs and finding out I am not alone in this battle. Thanks for all the informtion and may God keep us strong and headed in the right direction.

I started on this diet in January 2006. During that time I weighed 395 pounds. I knew then that I could not do this on my own. I knew that this was bigger than me. But it was just right for God. With God help and alot of determination. I now weight 324 pounds. I just heard about this web site tonight. And I have read alot of successful stories. These stories have encourage me to hang on in there. Because there are times when I feel alone on this diet. My goal is to reach 150 pounds. So please keep me in your prayers. Thank You!

I later drink another 20 oz of water. I do not get hungry this help cut my appetite. And it really do taste great. and it cleanse my body.

I have been struggling to lose 35 pounds for the longest while. I do very well during the day, eat healthy, drink water but the nights I get into the junk. HELP PLEASE

pamela:

I need to lose 60 pounds and I want to accomplish this by the 1st of November, that is the weekend that Steve Harvey will be performing in Macon, GA. and I will be there. My sisters and I have set a challange that the one who loses the most weight will not have to pay for their tickets, dinner, or outfit. The one who loses the least amount of weight has to pay for tickets and dinner. I want to be the winner! But in the end though we all are really winners because we all lost (weight that is). Another goal I set for myself, is to participate in my first marathon in December. Its only a 3k, 5k, and 10k but what an accomplishment that would be. With disipline, dedication, and lots of prayer I'll make it.

cyndie:

When eating out ask for a to go container before your eat. Once the food is delivered transfer half to the container and take it home. Less on your plate means less that you eat. It's like the old saying - out of sight out of mind ... It works for me.

Jennifer:

I have been trying to lose weight for some time and I have been very unsuccessful. I needed and wanted something that would definitley jump start my weight loss. I was told by a fried of mine who had been successful on the Optifast diet, she lost 48lbs in 3 months. I know it sounds amazing but it works. The diet is medically supervised but it's a liquid diet. I know a lot of people can't do just liquid, it's really a mind over matter kind of issue. I figured that I had spent so much time, energy and money on everything else so why not.

I started the diet and the first week I lost 7lbs. The majority of it was water weight of course, but I lost it. As I went on week by week, I averaged between 4 to 8 lbs per week. So far I have been on this for about 6 weeks and I have lost 32 lbs. It is both a financial and a mental commitment to be on this diet. The cost is about $135 per week for the drinks and $40 for the appointment itself. But it's working.

I believe the reason that I am losing as much weight as I am is because I have been working out. The calorie count is 800 per day and drinking 120oz of water per day. It's easy for me because I usually don't have time to eat most days anyway. I can just drink the shake while I'm at my desk at work. You drink one every three hours, so I do them at 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm and 8pm and drink water in between. When I need a taste for something I have been chewing gum.

If you can afford it, I would suggest it. It's not recommended for anyone who has less than 40lbs to lose. It may be covered by your insurance, so you can check before you try it. But for me it wasn't. I want to lose about 80lbs so I am definitely on my way there now.

Just another resource in case you are having trouble. I will say that it is very hard to do this with all of the commercials and still having to cook for my husband and kids, but I figured that I needed to see immediate results and I am defintiely getting them.

Odis D. Pearrie:

MY WIFE AND I ARE WORKING OUT TOGETHER I THINK THIS MAKE IT A LITTLE MORE EASIER. WHEN SHE WALKING MY DOING SOME THING ELSE. ALSO YOUR MACHINE ARE IN FRONT OF THE TV. GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY I GOT YOUR BACK.

Tecie:

@ jasmine
I suggest, drinking nothing but water, No Starch for example pasta, rice, potatoes. No flower, bread, butter, mayonnaise, or breaded foods. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Set a time of the day that you won't eat after, for example I try not to eat after Seven PM. Lots of walking and exercise in the early AM Like 5am or 6am then at night after work. This should do it for you.

C:

Several years ago, I weighed over 220lbs. It was very difficult for me to lose weight as an asthmatic, but I started one step at a time. Walking took off most of the weight. I began walking 10 minutes every day, then increased the time to 1 hour a day walking at least four miles a day. Food was prepared in soups (not canned soups). All the vegetables and fish were baked or steamed, vegetables were eaten raw primarily asparagus, brocolli and spinach. No diets, no tomatoes, no crackers or juice. One cheat day a week(Sundays). Much prayer, forgiveness, seeking God and soul searching. I did get down to my target weight and no more sickness. Now, I am preparing to lose some more weight to change my profession to law enforcement.
Don't give up and take care of yourself for God, yourself and for the people who love you.
Love you,

C.

I think it is possible for you to lose the weight. I year ago, I lost 10 is 9 days by following Dr. Ian 9 day food detox detailed in his book. It takes a lot of dedication and discipline but you can do it.

Anonymous:

I know this might sound kinda silly, but I am getting married in April, and I know its not unrealistic for me to lose at least 10-15 pounds before then. I need help with what to do to get as close to that goal as possible. Any suggestions?
