I was 191 pounds before I got pregnant with my first. I was mentally tramatized because I heard stories of woman who never lose their baby weight and I was already starting out overweight.
Throughout my pregnancy, friends and family would always tell me, "you're eating for two now" and they would serve me huge portions of food and always try to encourage me to eat more, as they do in our culture.
I went to the throne and said "Lord, I can't do this alone, if I promise to do my part you have to promise to do yours. I don't want to be fat!" So I started to say "no" to my family and friends, which can be a sign of disrespect, especially to the elders in the family when they cook.
I ate moderately throughout my pregnancy gaining only 25 pounds. I breastfed which burns lots of calaries and is best for your baby and:
- I portioned my food accordingly,
- Drank 1% milk,
- Cooked with Extra Virgin Olive Oil,
- Bought lean cuts of meat and baked or sauteed the food I usually enjoyed fried, and
- I walked 15 minutes everyday.
Us Latin and African American people know how to cook and cook with flava so I had to learn to stop those cultural traditions that were killing my family and take charge of my health for me and my future generation.
I ended up losing so much weight just by making small changes, that I ended up being 20 pounds thinner than I was before I got pregnant in the first place -- 171 pounds!
I just had my second baby in October 2007. I gained 35 pounds this time. So I was back up at just over 200 pounds when he was born.
I'm doing much of the same things I did before, and currenlty I am 188 pounds.
For those of you mommy's out there... it's definately harder to lose the second round of baby fat, but I won't give up. I'm a stay at home mom with two baby's under two and most of the time I don't have time to eat, let alone eat right. When I do eat they're usually screaming in my face which makes me eat faster but I think about Dr. Ian's tips and how I must slow down and enjoy every bite so I do.
And, as for excercise, I use my kids as weights and do strength training! I also run back and forth from task to task trying to get my heart rate up! Soon I will get back out there and start my walking.
Dr. Ian's visit to my church really pumped me up. Just the fact that someone cared enough to give us free stuff like the pedometer and water bottle really inspired me. I drink water like a mad woman, I carry it wherever I go.
My goal is to be 150 pounds by the time my second turns 1 in October! My dream is for my husband to be able to pick me up and carry me like his bride!
Another tip, I weigh myself every morning and I have (ironically) a state farm calander nailed up in my bathroom where I document my weight daily. That way I see it, and my husband see's it, so he can encourage me and praise me when he see progress or motivate me when he doesn't and it works for me too because when I get discoraged I flip back the calender and get to see how far I've come.

I actually just joined today and I was reading your story! So inspirational. I am only 23 and I have 2 kids. My oldest is 3 my youngest is almost 2. I work full time I just started school and I am also married. Reading your story is such a big help. It's proof that I can do it with all off the busy things I have going on. I have been fighting my weight since my oldest was born and nothing has worked. I can not wait to get started and see what happens. Thanks so much for sharing your story.

I have recently started and this is a major undertaking for me, food is always that hardest part of any diet for me, but it is all mental for me, getting my mind right and not focusing so much on food, learning to stop, and not giving into craving, it is more then willpower it is about mentally acknowledging my hunger and when I just do not need to eat, how do you all handle that.

Congrats Ana! I am also a mother of two. My youngest is 10mos. I was able to lose all of my baby weight and an additional 14lbs. My current issue is losing more weight. I am 196lbs. I would like to be a healthy 165lbs. I used to be in the military, so that means I was physically fit. My lowest weight was 130lbs. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring me to get motivated.

I am a 44 year old female. I weight 198 pounds, I am 5-4 and would like to loose 55 pounds. I have started by cutting my portion size down and eating half of my meal when I go out for dinner. I am going to start walking everyday and eventually move into working out. I gained weight after a back injury and several steroid shots to help with the pain. The steroid shots helped with the pain but it also helped me gain about 50 pounds. After all the weight gain I became depressed and did not know how to get the weight off. When I saw the 50 million pound challenge I decided to join.

Good for you! As a momma of four, ages 4,3,2, and 10 months, I know how hard it is to loose that unwanted baby weight. I just signed up today and am very excited to get started. And reading your story has given me the added boost that I needed. I've had 4 kids in three years. Pre-prego I weighed 188. I am now a whopping 288! Seeing you lets me know I can acheive my goal of 175! Thanks Girl! Keep it up!

Anna,
After reading your story, I have become sooo inspired!! I really felt like I was the only one feeling this way- I find myself in the same situation as you- I just had my third baby in December '07, I have a daughter who will be 2 on Saturday, and have a 6 yr old. It is soooo hard to try to lose weight, juggle work, and the average home duties. I have joined the 50 million challenge today, I am going to dedicate myself, focus and give it my all. After reading your story, I know I can do it! Thanks for sharing, good luck and best wishes to you and your family.

Anna First an formost congrats on the new arrival.. I had a baby myself on march 31st of this year and I gained about 75 pounds threw out my pregnancy.. On April 5th I weighed in at 211 pounds and now I am at 189!! This is baby number 3 for me so I know how hard it can be to loose the weight when my 2nd child was born I was dedicated in loosing 100 pounds and I did in a year.. And so now Iam dedicated in loosing the last 56 pounds my only concern for you is that it's kinda of stressful to weigh yourself everyday because you might of ate something the night before or havnt gone to the bathroom etc. I do it every Mondays.. But anyway congrats on ur sucesss!!! Keep up your dedication!!!

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to thank each of you for sharing your stories. I decided in March, 2008 to start exercising. During my first week of exercising, I fell off my treadmill. As a result of the fall, on March 28, I was diagnosed with a blood clot located above my heart and restricted from walking on my treadmill. I had lost about 9 pounds walking 5 days a week for about 40-50 minutes. I have lost 11 pounds total.
I just want to ask everyone to be careful and don't try to do too much too fast. I wish everyone to keep up the good work.

I think the BMI calculator is a joke! They cannot categorize you as obese or over weight without first finding your bodyfat percentage. I am a bodybuilder and have less than 5 percent bodyfat and it says I am Obese. lol.

Is there anyone in the North Nashville, TN area that would like to get together and walk sometimes? Not power-walking, just a little quicker than a leisurely pace at one of the parks or greenways.

I am very frustarted right now so if anyone has advice let me know. I recently had a baby and weighed 218 lbs. I recently lost a lot of weight and was at 165. However, I love chocholate of anykind and once I start I don't stop. I have gone back up to 190 and I am so mad at myself. Any advice of staying on track? My problem is if I allow my self to have one day of chocholate I don't stop having chochlate and I eat it all day!

I just wanna say this diet is great in all and i love that dr ian is trying to help the nation to be healthy but it is also costly. Yes everyone would love to eat healthy and be on the right track but it cost to much to eat the type of foods that are healthy for example a loaf of white bread is 1.00 a loaf of wheat is 2.69 especially when your a family of 6 its kinda hard to eat healthy!!!!!

I am 53 years old and a single mom. I had been an OR nurse for almost 29 years, then had to leave the profession due to the fact that I also have Multiple Sclerosis and the physical and mental stress of the job was adversely effecting my illness. I have been struggling to lose weight and keep it off--I've lost weight before, only to gain it all back plus more. At 5' 9" and 210, I don't LOOK very heavy, but I feel it everytime I walk--there's so much "junk in the trunk" that I can't even close the trunk anymore (LOL)! Anyway, I'm determined to not only lose 40 pounds, but maintain it by getting a healthier lifestyle. I do go to the gym 2-3 times a week and I walk at least 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. I seem to be getting stuck at 210 ( I also drink at least 2 liters of water, and I'm cutting back on the unhealthy foods like white flour, sugar, white rice, and eating more fruit and veggies.) I need some support--it's discouraging to weigh myself after working so hard, only to NOT see the numbers moving. I'm trying to focus on losing body fat, since my BMI is 31, so I really want to lose inches as well. Any support you all can give me is appreciated. God bless!

Keep it up Anna Mary!!! I will be 38 this year, and I am the mother of a soon-to-be 3 year old son. Since joining the challenge last summer, I've lost weight and gained it back. I'm now back on track and DETERMINED to shed the (30) pounds this time. I want to be in better shape before having another child. I only have one kidney (I donated the other to my Mom shortly after having my son), and being pregnant and overweight would be too taxing on my body. This past Saturday I walked my first 10K race (6.2 miles). It was challenging, but I was proud of myself for doing it. I finished, and I wasn't last! I'm looking forward to my next 10K at the end of May. I'll be walking as much as possible to prepare for this one. I know I can do this, and you can too!! Blessings!

Good for you Anna Mary! I am a new mom and I had gestational diabetes during the pregnancy. The weight didn't help and 18 months later, I'm still trying to lose weight. I want to be healthier for me and my young daughter. I know anything can happen to me at any time, but if there is any little thing I can do to improve myself while I'm here on earth-- why shouldn't I do that?!! I joined the 50 million pound challenge today and hope to have a success story to submit a few months from now. I also hope God will bless my husband and I with another baby. If that happens, I don't want to head into the pregnancy overweight, like I was prior to my first pregnancy. Keep up the good work and enjoy those kids!! God Bless You.
