A Problem with the Numbers

Goal setting is a like a sharp and emotionally divisive double-edged sword. In one corner of your mind is a strong and unbreakable hope that envisions nothing but success. Then, the other corner is possessed by a chilled, doubtful cynicism that pessimistically scoffs at your goal. Dr. Ian Smith discussing the Challenge

Regardless of why you’ve set a goal, whether it’s success in your career or trying to get back into those size 8 dresses, the battle between hope and doubt exists in each of us.

I had a recent interview with Carl Bialik, “The Numbers Guy”, a blogger from Wall Street Journal (WSJ.com) that brought the reality of this tension to light. The story he wrote is insightful as he examines the 50-million-pound goal of our Challenge.

His story is posted and I’d you to take a look at it. Just click on the title, Trying to Lose 50 Million Pounds, to bring it up on your computer.

There’s always been a problem with the numbers in goal setting, and our Challenge is no different. But reviving our commitment to this cause of health and spreading the word proves, yet again, that hope and hard work crowns a champion.

I’m realistic enough to know the loftiness of our goal. Like you, I put on my gloves daily to beat down the doubt and cynicism in my mind that says we can’t achieve success.

And, I still believe the real “wow-factor” of this large number makes a profound statement. Each time you update your progress on our site, we grow closer defeating the pessimist in the dark corner of our minds.

Trust that you’re never alone on this journey. And believe that we’re making history together.

Yours in the Fight.
Dr. Ian ~

Dr. Ian, I just want to say thank you for this challenge. I have done only one diet over the years (WW) and found success to be short lived. I have found a new sense of belonging on your web-site, it feels right. I know that I don't get to sit down in a meeting, it's better, I get to sit down with myself and instead of feeling bad that I didn't lose more, I'm just fine with contributing to the 50 million. I'm starting a new chapter in my life and your site is playing a very key part. I hope to contribute at least 100 lbs to your cause....keep up the great work, and thank God you still believe in people.

Hey EW, Im sorry to hear about your troubles, but remember God has a plan. Since your unable to exercise, I suggest you watch your food intake. Carbs aren't our friend although sometimes it feels that way. Watching your carbs alone will help you, also doing little things around the house. I know you said that you couldn't walk, but does that mean at all or for long periods. If you can walk I suggest you try short walks and when you feel like you can't go further don't. Im not a doctor but i have back problems and what Ive noticed is being idle doesn't help my back, it actually causes more aches. Good Luck!!!! Oh, exercise is definitely a cure for the blues!!!!

Hello fellow challengers and Crying soul,
From reading the awesome story regarding the lawyer who lost 45lbs, she basically set an attainable goal of losing 10lbs and surpassed it! We all can do the same. God only knows what obstacles are headed in our paths, but we can do our very best to be successful despite those obstacles. One thing I've learned from challenging weight loss is to remember to continue doing something to help with your goals. Regardless, remember to love yourself wherever you are in your goals and keep expecting to see the wonderful changes.

Crying soul, you've had some real life adversity and health conditions that has affected you. Set short term goals, maybe 15 lbs out of 80 lbs by a certain month. Based upon what you said previously....."I was not eating after 6 pm and had no fried foods, I was drinking 6 12oz bottles of water a day. and I was even going to the gym...." If it worked before, then continue along this path watching your portions. Since your anticipating surgery, focus on your health and find out what your doctor recommends in terms of physical fitness. You already have the will...don't give up!
