I was very excited when I learned the challenge was for all Americans and not just African-Americans, as I thought after seeing the ads. THANKS, DR. IAN! Although I didn't really participate or login for the first few months after I signed up, my motivator (or should I say, the final straw?!) came when I failed to make my required Army Reserve weight. This can cost your career and is quite embarrassing (to me).
I already did cardio and weights, but just enough to maintain and I felt I could eat whatever I wanted because I worked out. NOT! So I cut back on calories by finding low-cal foods that I liked to eat, such as fat-free jello and pudding for snacks, and I eat yogurt or a banana for breakfast. I eat very light meals, veggies and meat. Sometimes I just want good old-fashioned peanut butter sandwiches on 40 calorie bread. I switched out soda for diet soda and diet green tea and I drink lots of water. Sometimes I splurge, yep, sure do! But I always get back on track. Before when I splurged, I would say, "See, I failed, why try?" Not anymore, I get back to what I know is right and keep on, keeping on!
I have increased my workouts, too. I run longer (40-45 min, instead of 30) and sometimes I just run 20 minutes and do the stairstepper or the bike for 20-25 minutes) depending on how my body feels. I increase the challenge by running as fast as I can for 30 seconds every 5 minutes, then slowing back down or while on the stairstepper or bike I increase the resistance. If I am feeling out of sorts, I may just walk. I always run on the treadmill (unless the Army Reserve makes me run on a track or cement) because I feel the impact less on my old bones. And those times when I feel I've overdone it, I rest a day or two or three (I'm no spring chicken you know!) I also lift heavier weights for less reps. I work out 3-5 days a week.
I fell for the media hype that when you get past 40, it's nearly impossible to lose a pound, much less keep it off, so I was defeated in my mind. Although I haven't even lost into the double digits yet and it's taken me awhile to get there, I am proud of my progress so far (down one size) and glad that I am on my way to a healthier me, inside and out! Thanks for your support and the 50 Million Pound Challenge! Thanks Dr. Ian!

Hi Pauline,
I remember when you first came in the office talking about this challenge and suggesting that we all get in on it. Too busy with work at the time, I smiled at your excitement, but din't log on to the site. Today, I saw a commercial on TV and logged on thinking back to your initial excitement. Imagine my amazement at seeing you as a featured challenger. Now in KY alone, I am searching for anything to keep me busy (with less work, no kids and husband, I am going mad slowly). I know all the "right things" to do, but hardly touch my treadmill or work out CDs and have taken up late snacks. I have gained 5 lbs in the last month and as you know, one pound can make a difference in the military. So I am joining the challenge this evening to lose those 5 plus another 10 or so. The biggest thing for me is not so much the actual weight numbers than inches in the stomach, thighs and bottom. Anyway, I'm glad I logged on and it's good to see a familiar face (even if it is online). Take care and good luck!

forjoy....I usually try to eat a few hours before I work out. At least two. I can eat five seconds after a workout if I am famished enough...lol! Stay strong!
Chozgirl, Thanks for the encouragement. You are great!
Happy Thanksgiving! After we eat all that good food...go for a walk or run!

Sincerely

This message is for hotgirl35. I understand your pain and lack of motivation, but find an incentive to lose the wt. be it health, money, or self satisfaction. Remember, it is smarter to lose the pounds. Find an old picture of yourself when you were looking good and slim. Place it in that spot that you visit everyday like the bathroom mirror. Look at it and tell yourself that is who you are. Buy a too small dress and find the determination to get in it. Find your old jeans and hang them in clear view. You have to find your motivation, and it comes from within. Do it for you. Believe in yourself, and by all means ask the Lord for strength.
I don't know how old you are (maybe 35), but look at Janet Jackson and Vivica Fox, both over 40, and say WOW. Yeah, we know they pay someone to train them, and they get a little nip tuck/surgery here and there, but it is still a challenge b/c they have to DO IT. The WT does not come off of anyone just by doing nothing no matter who you are. Rich or Poor you can lose the WT for free with Dr. Ian. Take advantage of what is being offered. I will start tomorrow, and I can't wait to record my progress. Save the money for the incentive dress. You have got to believe in yourself, if you want others to motivate you, assist you or just help you in any way. No one wants to help a person that does not believe or want to help themself.
Holla.
Good Luck.

Hi Pauline,
I just joined the challenge, and I am getting familiar with the site. While doing so, I read over your story. I can truly relate b/c I am in the military as well, and I know that failing a HT/WT test is a terrible thing.
How can you lead from behind? You can't!
Lead by example.
Set the standard and stay strong. You can do it.
Holla.

Hi Pauline:
I think you look really great. I cant see where you need to lose any weight. However, I know the military has standards and if you want to be a part of their organization you have to be in compliance. I support you wholeheartedly in your goal to lose the weight. I wish you continued success as you strive to meet your goal.

Thanks for all your encouragement!
Damon, You are the best! Thanks!
Gloria, Don't let that plantar's facetious stop you! I had it before and I did my foot exercises (write the alphabet in the air with your foot) and wore lots of cushion, plus, as I mentioned, I rarely run/walk on hard surfaces. Eventually, it went away. Don't feel bad about those little midnight cheats! It's not candy or soda! Keep up the good work!
Gia, Thanks alot! The picture I posted was from June. I would like to post a new one soon. I have lost around 15 lbs.
Loretta, Maybe I will try giving up meat for awhile and see how I feel. Keep on going! God Bless!

It is gratifying to learn that I have lost 19 lbs since 9/04/08. However, I am currently battling emotional stress which is creating interuption in my sleep at night. I will wake up in the middle of the morning (4 am) to eat a spoonful of sherbert or eat a piece of lunch meat. I feel pretty awful when that happens. I am a sigle parent raising a 12 year old daughter and my 18 year old son stays with me as well. My social life in terms of dating doesn't exist. Quite frankly, I'm lonely! To combat the urges of continusly overeating I recently for the past two months have been excersing (water aerobics, elliptical machine, and the stationary bike) at the gym at least four to five days a week. Recently, I have had to decrease my visits to the gym due to my recent diagnosis of plantar fatious. A very painful condition that affects the heel area of your feet such as in my case. Nonetheless, I am remaining consistent when choosing healthier foods to eat and how often to eat them. I've come a long way in that area. With the support of this program I know I will remain successful in reaching my goal of 100 pounds by 9/04/09

I am a team member of snap milw. I have given up both pork and beef. I have had no pork or beef for 2 months. I feel great, i have more energy and a lot more get up and go. I do eat peanut butter and cereal high in fiber. I don't miss the meat products at all. I am losing weight and looking good.
