In the News: America needs to keep movin'...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are trying to spark Americans to exercise.

As each of know, maintaining an exercise plan is essential, but not easy to do. So, in the spirit of giving, post a comment letting us know:

  1. What your biggest obstacle to exercising is, and
  2. How do you overcome it?

Motivation to breakthrough barriers comes when we realize we're not the only ones dealing with a particular issue. The article above may have exposed the problem, but not acting on what we've read will only add to the problem.

This community is bonded by common resolve for a solution... So, let us know: How are you breaking through?

I can't find the Healthy Snacks List and it seems important to the overall plan. Can you help me?

GarrysChunkyMonkey:

We Can Do This. This is the deal 3 weeks ago my Doctor called me at home to tell me I was a Heart Attack, Stroke, waiting for a place to happen, my cholesterol was through the roof. The next day I find out from the doctor that my Blood pressure was also a heart attack waiting for a place to happen. After being preached to by my doctor, I agreed to the Cholesterol medicine but refused at the age of 38 to go on Blood pressure medicine. She warned me of the dangers, and informed me of what I needed to do. #1 Loose the excess 65 pounds, #2 quit drinking 10+ pepsi's per day, #3 quit smoking. I have 3 children and a very supportive Husband, whom all need ME. In the past 2 weeks I have totally and I am serious changed my diet, I eat very healthy, I have only had 3 pepsi's not in one day but in 2 weeks, I have developed a real liking to water with the sugar free flavor packs, I have been excerising EVERY DAY. Either with the Tread mill, WII Fit, or (Kick my butt) Jillian's biggest looser CD's. I have found that I actually like to work out, and look forward to it. Seems like it takes up a lot of my time and even though I am at home working out I am still missing out, this is an obstacle I must overcome, but I simply tell everyone, I WANT TO STAY AND SEE YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACES FOR AS LONG AS I CAN. I MUST DO THIS! everytime I want to quit I remember my Doctors words, Heart Attack, Stroke, waiting for a place to happen. NOT GOOD ENOUGH I AM 38.... I have successfully conquered the first 2 steps. In two weeks I have lost 19 pounds, gotten rid of the junk, and developed a craving for water and working out. There are two cigerettes left in my pack and when they are gone THERE WILL BE NO MORE.....What has helped me the most are those words from my doctor, and of course my families support (hopefully that won't get old for them). Favorite foods, veggies, water, fruit, water, Blueberry Shredded wheat, Low fat Wraps with Turkey and corn relish, Water, for snacks I am eating celery with peanut butter, or just plain, cheerios, fruit, water. For my work out's the WII fit is awesome, weighs you tests your center of balance, Aerobics, Strength training, Yoga, Balance games, keeps it fun, Treadmill tends to get boring, but is effective, Boxing on the WII is an incredible work out. Jillian's biggest looser's DVD workouts are incredible and will kick your butt, THEY are so incouraging and if you are a fan of the show Biggest looser you will see how the success of this show comes in to play. Any suggestions are totally appreciated, Good Luck to all of you and WE CAN DO THIS.

I find that being fat makes me depressed. Not only depressed but tired and unmotivated. MY job is so stressful. And my boss is a boss from hell. For the past 10 years it has been damn if I do and damn if I don't. Her stress and nasty attitude depressed me so i have gained 50 pounds. If i don't do something I will die. This I know. I am going to give this a try. And with GOD'S help I will make it.

Elizabeth:

My biggest demon is my health. I recently had a total knee replacement and need the other one done. In 2 weeks I am having eye surgery. I was diagnosed with glaucoma at an eary age and my optic nerve pressure is now out of control hence surgery on both eyes six weeks apart. I also have chronic Hep C and fybromyalgia, neuropathy, head and neck spasms. Some of the problems cannot be overcome. Those that can will be dealt with a positive outlook on life and determination to see my grandkids grow up. For the first time in my life I am scared. I have seen numerous specials on TV, read a lot online and realize that this fat is killing me. I just signed up for a water exercise class at my local YMCA and am very excited about changing my life. Thank you.

KindaBad:

My biggest obstacle is physical pain, and a feeling of being isolated. I joined today...thinking this may be my last chance to get back to normal life.

I'm 50, short and fat, and my body is just not built to handle all the extra weight, which has settle right in the middle.....the most dangerous place.

Both of my parents died too soon from complications of diabetes, and I don't want my husband or kids to ever have to experience watching me go through what they did.

I can't find a team in my area, which just adds to my feeling of having to go it alone. I haven't been to the Dr. in years, because I'm too embarrassed of my weight gain and the way I look. I'm so afraid this will lead me to a full blown depression, which is NO WAY my personality.

I'm a little beat up, got a lot of miles on me, and I'm not running as smooth as I once did.....but I'm looking for help to get me there!

mollmon:

I as a rule get up at 4 am every weekday and excercise, be it treadmill, stepper, or other. I am a morning person, but my biggest downfall is if I don't get up at 4 as usual, the excercise will not get done even if time permits in the evening. I would like to get over this obstacle and become more flexible. I have fought the weight loss battle all my life. I will be 48 in April.

Rachel:

I have been fluctuating for years but things have really come to a head since I quit practicing weight watchers, going to the gym and quit smoking. I've blown up! Now I'm finding that I can't even walk through the grocery store without excruciating pain in my back and knees, I have to use one of those motorized chairs now and I'm only 41! So I'm going back to the gym but with all that in mind I felt limited as to what I could do. What I've found for myself is that the recumbant cross trainer is something I can sit down on and provides the least amount of impact to my knees. I need to do this and I hope I can stick with it so I can be healthy for my family.

Veronica:

Exercise in the moring is the best. Most people by the time you cook dinner, help with homework, play with the lonely dog that has been at home all day, talk with your spouse or friends. It is DARK. I find that, when you have variety success is bound to happen. You don't get tired of the same old boring thing. For me, cycling at least 3x a week, make your own little obsticle course( jump rope, run 1/2 mi, streching etc.), exercise tapes on rainy days or don't feel like leaving the house. The key is just keep moving and watch the carbs. Those yummie sweets, breads, & ice cream.

pat:

My comment on exercise is this. I had a knee relacement 6 mos. ago & my stamina to keep going just isnt there. does anyone have any suggestions as to an exercise regimen for this. I have a treadmill and a stationary bike.

Jacqelyn Gabriel:

Finding the time to exercise is my biggest challenge. I take care of my husband who is chronically ill and requires around the clock care. We have a CNA who cares for him while I am at work. My plan is to walk during my lunch hour 5 days a week. I hope to be able to afford a treadmill soon. I don't mind doing the exercise and could do more if I had the equipment at home. look to God to provide what is needed He has never failed me yet.

Jen:

My biggest obstacle is motivating myself to exercise REGULARLY. I'll start out all pumped up but by week 2 I lose it.

I read something that actually helps...
"Forget the all-or-nothing attitude. When you're not in the mood to work out, tell yourself that you'll just do ten minutes."

It's true that once you get going you'll probably stick out the whole 30-45 minutes.

Try Leslie Sansone's "walk away the pounds" 3 mile work out. It's low impact, but you'll feel yourself sweating off calories. Try to do atleast one mile every day.

Alicia:

I also found that working out in the morning works out better for me...I have added running on my treadmill workout to add a little excitement. I walk 3 minutes and then run 1 minute or longer if possible. Usually the whole treadmill workout last 35-45 minutes, right now 3-4 days a week. I increase five minutes every two weeks. Sometimes, I can't get up in the morning and usually that's when i give up but now i am trying to keep going no matter what! I am tired of giving up every year after 5-6 months of excercise..I have got to make my goal or my health will be in jeapardy!(currently obese by 50lbs and fluctuating blood pressure)

Mary:

I haven't seen a bigger obstical like the one I am experiencing right now. I had surgery on my right foot in Sept. then on my left foot in Dec. Between these two surgeries my weigh stayed the same but my clothes became very tight because of my inactivity. I will be in a non- weight bearing cast until Jan. 20, then a walking cast until Feb. 17th. I am trying to do ab. work outs, but am limited with the cast. I also would like to figure out a way to be cardio, but might have to wait til after Feb. 17. I need to pay better attention to my eating right now, because the inactivity wreaks havoc.
any ideas or suggestions?

Kiki:

My biggest problem is time.

I work 2 full time jobs, I'm working on my last class in college, I'm active in church & bible study, I am a member of my town Special Events Committee so I have meetings to attend & if we have events I have to be there to work them, I'm a praise dancer, I sing in my family's gospel group and the list goes on & on.

What I've found that helps is a schedule. I write down my schedule over the weekend for the following week and see how I can fit the gym in. I have brought several exercise DVD's to have at home, which helps a lot.

Pjfox:

I am attending graduate school full time, and I am a mother of 3. Because I am paying so much money for school, that is my first priority; therefore, it is difficult to fit exercise into my schedule. Can anyone offer help/advice?

kevin wilson:

Hello Dr. Ian, how do you stay in shape if you are a truck driver? Every time I pull into a truck stop, the only option we have is McDonalds, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, etc. Oh yeah Subway is available to us too but I can’t afford to pay 6 dollars for a sandwich 3 times a day. What about exercise? I use to do 30 minutes on a stair stepper but when I started driving trucks that ended so what do I do now that I’m a truck driver?

Angela Howard:

Since I've been on the challenge, I have lost 41 lbs. I stay motivated by doing these 5 things.
1. I review my goals, the reasons I want ot lose weight and get healthy every night before bed.
2. I have a personal trainer to work out with 4 X week. I feel worse about missing a workout knowing he is waiting for AND I Have already paid for his time slot.
3. I have a health coach through Take Shape For Life helping me with better food choices. I eat at least 6 small meals everyday.
4. I weight myself once a week and have weekly goals
5. I log my exercise time and food choices, seeing it all in writing helps keep me accountable ( I have this on-line so trainer and coach could look at & it would totally embarass me if I am paying for their advice and then be dumb enough not to follow it.)

Anna Mary:

My second biggest obstacle is HAIR! I must admit I love straightening my hair and I avoid exercise because I HATE sweatin' out my hair do. It's actually a common problem that most of us ethnic ladies face...WHAT TO DO!?! I've tried going natural but I prefer the flat iron!

My third biggest obstacle is NEIGHBORHOOD! Hello? Can I get an AMEN? Stray Dogs, Crime...I just don't live in the "CLEANEST" neighborhoods if you know what I mean. So PLEASE VOTE FOR ME as the CHALLENGER OF THE YEAR so I can buy me a treadmill from Craigs list! :) Please!

Anna Mary :

My biggest Obstacle for exercising, like many of you is the Laziness, but research shows that people who exercise in the morning are more likely to stick to their routine because, like Rhonda said you don't have those "hard day, it's raining, i'm tired" excuses...let's be real here, something ALWAYS comes up. Rhonda I like your DVD variety thing too...I am newly inspired to get up in the morning! Join me! You can do it! Just go to bed a little earlier!

David Norals:

My name is David Norals I go to CVS. Im in the tenth grade. You are at my school today for career day.

Ayodele:

It has been extremely hard. I started a journal, wrote down my weight, and tried to make healthier choices. It isn't working for me. I am getting very depressed because I am getting bigger and bigger everyday. I finally became so frustrated today that I visited a website and said "enough already". I am in control and I need to make the change. Nothing is going to happen with me just sitting there.

Terrence:

hey Mr. Nash my name is Terrence White and i attend Chicago Vocational Career Academy and my division is 120

Shonquinta:

My biggest obstacle is finding the time to work out with four children! So how I overcome that is to play with them at the park or running around the house, dancing together, jumping (rope), Pick them up and carry them short stretches often, Go for a walk, run, skate, ride a bike around the block. I even walk to pick them up from school versus driving whenever possible.

On the weekends because I will have all of them at home, I wake up at 5 and exercise in the living room with tapes I own or borrow from the library. It gives me my energy for the day and I am more productive that way.

For those of you who may have kids who are teens or grown up, you can still workout together, but don't try the picking them up part:)

Best wishes to all

Becca:

My biggest obstacle for exercising is my knees. I have to find some sort of exercise that is low impact but burns alot of calories. I also do not like to exercise alone and everytime I get a partner they weenie out on me. How can I overcome this and what can I do that is low impact that burns alot of calories?

Gina:

My biggest obstacle to exercise is my energy level. I have fibromyalgia and three children (5 y.o. twins and a 5 mo. old baby). If I don't sleep well (which happens often!) I feel very tired, and with the fibromyalgia when I feel tired I ache. That really brings my energy and my motivation down.

Just recently I've tried to increase my activity level. When I feel so tired that I just want to take a nap, I just on the elliptical for 30 mins. or turn on an exercise DVD instead. I feel much more energized!

Linda:

Hello ever one yes i agree . we all haft to keep a moving. or we will slow down. there so much thing a going on in life we all haft to jog or start walking and smell the flowers life has to ofter us. and take care of our self . we have only one body .eating healthy and drinking lots of water. your feel great and start looking great.. once you get unbound from life stress . koo boomm you have been Blessed..

Sara:

My issue is getting the time. I have two children under 3 and it's a busy day from start to finish. I have just recently started waking up an hour before they do to fix a healthy breakfast and do a little exersize.
DON"T DRINK JUICE throughout the day. Drink a glass like once. Juice fills you up then makes you even thirstier. Don't get addicted to the juice sugars.
It's just the mental block that says, I can't...I've heard of others who just want to catch this special on tv, then that episode, so they don't get the weight off. I'm not a tv person so much so ...
Also, it's the guys.
I don't exersize if my fiance is around. He either watches me, which makes me nervous, or he tries to give suggestions, which discourages me becuase he's watching too closely.
It may be my issue, but I feel so fat when I exersize. He's in construction so doing three push ups is a three year old thing, but for me...ha! I'd have heart palipitations by the second one.

Rhonda:

My biggest obstacle to exercising is time. if I don't exercise first thing in the morning, it just won't happen. You know the excuses: working late, tired from a hard day, your children's activities or just being lazy. However, when I roll out of bed in the morning (4:30 am) and do it, I feel much better. More importantly, it gets done! I have a 4 day exercise dvd rotation: Hollywood Trainer, Turbo Jam, Fluidity and Walk Away the Pounds. I do this so I don't dred doing the same workout each morning. I also enjoy seeing how much stronger I am from week to week.

Soulsista43:

My biggest challenge is making the time to exercise on a regular. With working, family and school full time, it's hard to find the time or energy.

I heard that working out first thing in the morning works, but sometimes I am so tired I just want to take that extra 30 minutes for sleep.

Any advice?

Ishya Dotson:

My biggest problem with exercise is having the energy and time to do it. I guess the only way to overcome this problem is to make it a high priority and change those things that contribute to me not have time and energy.

Trish50:

My biggest challenge to exercising is my work schedule and I have twin 13 year olds who keep me pretty busy; that is part of it; the other part is I feel tired all the time, partially because I am overweight and I know it, (which kind of makes me depressed) and because I hate my job. All of this just kills any motivation for working out.

How do I overcome it? I just have to make the time and make myself go work out. I used to be in the military so I already know that the more you work out, the better you feel, the more you will want to work out. Working out used to be a strong discipline for me. Now, I guess in the 13 years I have been out of the military, that discipline has left me because..Life has taken over..and I just dont feel like it?? I dont have many friends, or rather any friends that are interested in being healthy or healthier, so what do I do??

Deborah Gordon:

My biggest obstacle to excercising is getting started. I work at a hospital with a 4-story parking garage and I used to walk around the levels during my lunch break, but when I "fell of the challenge wagon" I stopped doing it. Sometimes I feel like I have to do a complete aerobics routine or lift weights to "truly" excercise, but I did lose weight before by simply walking 30 minutes everyday, so that's what I intend to start back doing. It is so tempting to relax and enjoy the Christmas snacks and parties but I've decided to not "cut-out" certain things, but instead to monitor my intake. That way I won't relapse and eat everything in sight. This is Day 1 (again) and we'll see how it goes.

Ty:

My biggest obstacle to exercising is simple...LAZINESS...

I overcome my laziness by looking in the mirror every day and reminding myself of why I need to exercise. I set a new goal - to fall in love with exercise - and it's working. I've committed to walking every day during lunch (unless it's raining) for at least 20 minutes. Once I get started, I usually walk for about 30 - 45 minutes. If I can't walk during lunch, I ride my bike at home after work. If I miss a day, I don't sweat it. I renew my committment to me every day.

Porsha Robinson:

My biggest obstacle with exercising is my attitude towards it.I looked at it like the part of my day I just could not stand!!lol.I hated trying to throw all my extra weight around with the different exercise routines, being out breath, and just plain out of shape!!But I stuck it out, sometimes cussing straight threw it!!As I got stronger everything started to become easier.I began exercising for longer periods of time without my heart feeling like it was going pop!!I am so proud of myself because I am currently at 45min,4-5days a week!I do cardio and weight training.I use Walk Away The Pounds by Leslie Samsone (i hope the name is right)and this workout system called The Firm (i ordered it from T.V.)What has helped me to overcome the negative attitude towards exercising is that i know that if I continue to be sedentary that i will just continue packing on the pounds every year!!I also have high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer in my family and I am not trying to get any of it!!That is what has really scared me straight,I sometimes get to feeling lazy and do want to workout, but I fight it and do it anyway!!I always feel so victorious in my heart because i know that im doing it for me!! GOOD LUCK 2 EVERYONE,YOU CAN DO IT :)

I am having a hard time loosing pounds. I loose inches but gain weight. I use the eliptical machine and will start boxing class in January. I tend to get boared and loose interest. I also have knee problems so I cannot be as active as I one was. I weigh more than I have previously but I am smaller. Any suggestions on how to actually loose weight. Oh, I eat healthy. I am not a fried foods person. I like chicken and turkey and seafood.

gwendolyn kirksey:

i am a mother of ten children i have issue that have left me very insecure i am going on 40 and i want to live for me before its too late.

Anna Mary:

I stopped filling up that empty feeling inside me with temperary highs like food. I discovered that although some people had obvious addictions to Alcohol, Drugs and Ciggeretts others had more subtle addictions like shopping, the internet, working, text messaging, televison, bad relationships and food. I had the same addiction, and the culprit was food. Emotional Eater! I loved to stuff my face untill I felt that little throbbing in my stomach signaling me to stop, then I loved to curl up and take a long nap and sleep it off. In the end it was giving me the same high as Alcohol or Drugs were giving the next person. I decided to FINALLY quench that black hole inside me with a high that would never fade....intimacy with my creator, God. That is what my success is built on.
