What makes you eat more food

Food SpreadGetting to the point when you know you’re full and then you actually push back from the table can be difficult. You may be surprised to find out there are other reasons for overeating other than just fact that food is so good.

According to TIME magazine, our brain is wired in such a complex manner that certain variables can trick it into thinking we're hungry when we're not.

TIME reveals seven variables that can sometimes hinder our ability to make good decisions when it comes to food.  Read more about “What Makes You Eat More Food” in this photogallery from TIME magazine. Then come back and  post a comment telling us what you think.

anapolis:

we always eat more when we get bored. so it is best to find ways to keep ourselves active

Darren:

I am detoxing along with the smash diet book. Are you able to have a certain amount of salt during phase one?

IDefyLogic:

I think alot of what was said is true some of which is common sense very interesting about the alcohol and temperature would love to here more.

Samiah:

Wow what a help the time magazines was for me. It was like a light turned on for mr for the first time in a long time and I've been struggling with my weight for over ten years. Listen guys this is what it's going to come down to... making a real choice to make life the way we want, the way we deserve. We are the pleasantly plump community of people who only understand what were going through so we have to choose on our own if want to spend another lot of so many years dedicated to being unhappy, I wish everybody the best in there efforts, I know we can do it!

pam:

Hi, i have not started on the diet yet. I wanted to know would I need to follow it to the day or can I switch, for example, can I switch day 25 for day 6. Or can I eat day 2 for day 30..etc?.

Doris:

Food, for me, is like a drug and chocolate is the opium. I am a "closet" eater. I see a trip (alone) to town as a time to "get high". Dairy queen? I get a buzz. Krispy Kreme Donuts? I am flying high. A bag of M&M's from the drug store (no pun intended) and I am wasted. Is there a re-hab for chocolate? I am addicted and just typing this makes my mouth water. Ok, maybe it's not a as bad as all that, but close. I suppose I have an addiction type of personality. I used to smoke, but now I eat. If eating were as socially unaccepted, as smoking, then buying junk wouldn't be so easy.

April:

For me being bored and nothing to do causes me to eat. Sometimes I am not even hungry. Thinking of food all the time when i restrict myself to foods I really like causes me to go overboard and eat excessively. Stress is another trigger, when I was going through finacial difficulties food was my comfort. I now that I am unemployed I feel the same stressfull situation coming on eating just to be eating.

Anonymous:

don't like milk at all what can i substitue in the diet plan for that

charmagne vereen:

I've been on the diet since April 06,2009 and i've lost 17lbs. I dont crave salt and sweet's like I used to. I find that once i cheat I get addicted to keep tasting here and there. But what really saves me. Is the 3 and 4 pieces of fruit u can have in a day. Especially grapes....they fill me. Along with 64 oz. of water. As long as my stomach feels full I cant cheat no matter how good it tastes. Fruit and water is the key.
My husband is about to start the diet because he is shocked with my results

Angilina:

I think that this article has some good points that I was never aware of. I am an over eater do to the fact that I love the taste of good food and I love to eat alot of that good food. I eat for comfort and I hate it because I keep walking and I can feel that the walking is definately doing me some good and then I see a food that I enjoy eating and then I eat it and back to square one I go. Does anyone have any advise on how to stay strong and not give in.

Mary Beth Johnson:

A lot of the triggers mentioned in the article I found to be true for me. So that encourages me that I'm aware of some of the causes I eat. My continuing effort is now to address those triggers as they come up and find healthier options to avoid succumbing to them. I think a lot of people don't stop to think about how food is not only "life-sustaining" but can also be "life-destructive". I'm working a little harder each day on being more aware of when, why and how I face food triggers. And for everyone else out there who is fighting this "good fight" I wish you luck and lend you my support as well.

sharon:

im always over eating im tired of feelin like a loser

Mz. Jonez:

I tend to over eat when I am either bored or when I am near or on my cycle. Rainy days or the worst because you are at home sleeping or watching t.v. and all I want to do is snack! i also stay away from buffets because I tend to eat more than I need there also. Do anyone have any helpful suggestions on what might help me in this struggle?

cherice:

i eat because i am always hungry and i do not eat white bread or rice

Ms. Perry:

This was an interesting article. However, I felt that they forgot about things like boredom, depression and other emotional signals. I am more of an emotional eater. Even though water intake and exercise are the main things that help me maintain my weight, when I am depressed I tend not to drink water or want to exercise like I should, and also tend to eat more.

So I have to watch my stress level and not take everything to heart. Does anyone have any suggestions on things that I might be able to do to help with the stress level for a woman over 40? Thanks in advance :)

cierra :

In my opiniion we eat more when were bored. Not only that we tend to eat more on the weekends (intaking more food, more calories)than on weekdays. Some of us tend to eat too fast, which also makes us eat more. It takes about 15 min. for our brains to realize and send signals telling us that we're full. so the key is to eat slower and enjoy the food you take in.

Arnetta:

I have to agree with katie good food makes me eat, and I love good food, but I love my appearance more. The photo journal in Time some of the items looked tasty, and I have made room for dessert. the wonderful aroma of food tickles the taste buds. Portion control is key to a healthy lifestyle and I'm on my way!!!

gilligan183:

I have read into the work of one famous man by the name of Dr. john Mcdougall (www.drmcdougall.com) and he has a lot to say on satisfying our apetite. the only way to do it is with starches. Yes, it is true that he call for a starch based diet, and it works. people lose about a half apound a day on his, this was and still is true for me, until they become slim and stop losing weight. This is called reaching your setpoint, the weight your body naturally maintains on a certain diet.
I recommend checking his site out, you are alowed to eat as much as you want and you will still lose weight until you reach your setpoint, which is not fat.

Nicole Cannon:

I thought the article was an eye opener as it spoke about the science of appetite. The idea that carbs lower blood sugar which then promotes eating explains alot and will deter me from eating certain foods. Also, common sense things like eating more when it's colder relates to me. I tend to eat more in the winter and less in the summer with winter being the time I gain most weight. Thanks for suggesting the article.

Anonymous:

sometimes i think that we eat because we have nothing better to do .we also eat because we are stressed we know we are not hungery but becase we had a bad day at work we eat our hearts out.

Stephanie:

This article was particularly an eye-opener. I have to be very cautious about my portions and food options. Exercise and water intake is crucial for me.

Gramsup:

3 things jumped off the page for me fruit, blood sugar, fries. I start the day well but when 3:00 rolls around I am craving sweets. These do nothing to level out my blood sugar. I will research those foods that level out blood sugar for alternatives today and make a list and put them at the top of my grocery list.
Fruit idea with meal is excellant. I watched a program on fast food and what it does to you and was so repulsed I have no problem ignoring frech fries/ I do not order a value meals unless there are healthy alternatives. Having participated in weight loss programs before, I learned alot and I need to relearn those strategies along with some new ones. This was a great quick reference article. Thanks.

Dmacklin:

Thoughtful piece. It provides good information for encouraging more mindful eating.

Katie:

I was a little surprised about the temperature aspect. Maybe my fiance and I will start eating al fresco more often now that the weather is warming up here in nevada. I also found that putting away the left overs immediately instead of leaving them out for easy seconds is helpful for portion control.

lyrechal:

GOOD TASTING food is what maakes me eat more..............If it taste good then i want more .................. so i learned to cook fat free and salt free and sugar free and gues what? I cook good ....the food taste good so i want more .......the only difference is i loose weight now eating this way. PORTIONS is everything. so....... portions + good taste=20 pound loss for me in 2 months ;)

Marcus Waterhouse:

That article was very good and is true in many ways why we eat more food. Portion control is key and knowing when we our full so we don't over eat.
